How about a small tax on electricity to make up for the loss in gas taxes? This actually created a new benefit for switching over to electric cars as the cost will be distributed across everyone if they are driving an electric or not.

QUIT using your brain, logic, reasoning, and other useful shit. That has no place in government spending.

I would prefer a tax on a ton mile. And I agree all electric vehicles should be taxed for their share of road maintenance as they do far more damage to roads because they are heavier than normal cars. But still not even a tiny fraction of the damage of heavy semi-truck 18 or more wheelers.

But even if 20 ton semi's get very poor fuel mileage, they can make up for it with huge fuel tanks. And for the long distance trucker that calculus can become important if one small state charges more gas tax than another. Because they can use the the roads of the high tax state, fill up at a low fuel tax state, go right through the entire high tax state without buying a single dime of fuel, and then refuel in a low tax state on the other side.

But at least the long distance trucker can write off both fuel and fuel taxes on their Federal income taxes as a cost of doing business. As for the average working Joe or Jane, they can no longer write off the cost of their fuel or fuel taxes for even their daily commute to work on their Federal taxes.

Just another way the playing field is tilted to the rich and regressive for everyone else. As the other thing to note, railroads use far less fuel per ton mile than semi-trucks, and rail roads have a legitimate gripe in saying, the Federal and State governments subsidize public roads and do not give equal help to more fuel efficient railroads.

The best thing to do is:

1)Scrap the tax and fire these worthless trash scumbags for wasting time on such an ordeal. We're better off just borrowing the money to fix the roads and paying interest. That is cheaper than paying these scumbag's 6 figure pensions so they can sit around dreaming up new ways to tax and hand out money to their croney scumbag friends.

2) If we have to have a tax then just tax the gas by the gallon. Since the infrastructure is already in place to meter the quantities, this obviously makes too much sense. Herp-a-derp.

general gas tax is simpler and more effective.

those whole drive more are taxed more, those who drive less are taxed less, an those who drive bigger vehicles with lower fuel efficiency also get taxed more vs a lighter vehicle w/ higher fuel efficiency.

and it takes out all the logistical and administrative problems of trying to record and tax people based on mileage.

But I thought consumption taxes were regressive?!?!?!?!

So the pizza delivery guy with a Corolla driving hundreds of miles per day will pay far more than the executive driving a 9,000 pound Ford Excursion 20 miles per day, even though the excursion will probably put as much or more wear and tear on the highway. This is just another way to shift and increase the tax burden to the middle and lower classes.

neither do any wear and tear on the highway. you have to get well into the medium truck range to have any wear on the highway.

Tolls aren't so bad. Gas taxes aren't so bad. I can understand the whole "Electric cars don't pay taxes!" argument, its just such a small portion of the cars on the road. Call again when there are more :)

Mandatory GPS blackboxes can fix that problem. These devices can send your daily travel results directly to Washington without intervention from the user.

And of course they will have to build a huge computer system to track and bill and the taxes will have to be used to build and maintain the computer system. So where does that get us? More government jobs!

Just as hussein wants it.

Ultimately a hybrid model or total removal of the tax on gas for road maintenance is necessary. Certainly in states that have a yearly safety inspection this kind of thing is easy to assess. I drive an exceptionally fuel efficient vehicle and I do know that I am not "paying my fair share" of road wear with it.

Unless you drive a vehicle weighing over 10,000lb and getting 50mpg, you are paying plenty to cover your fair share of road wear (which is 0).

Everything wears, especially at stop lights. A road in my original county was blocked off to trucks and it still has potholes and cracked areas. I know some of it may have occured because of weather but I would say that heavier vehicles do more damage than lighter ones.

LOL. Just out of curiosity, what do you think that the GOP means when they say "broaden the base"? You think that means higher taxes on the wealthy or.....wait for it....wait for it....spread the current tax load out among MORE people meaning to place more of the current burden on the middle and lower classes?

Oh, and Hussien is dead. Obama's administration ordered him killed.

Absolutely not. Do you really want someone having you under 24/7 surveillance?

The only thing I think that would be "OK" for a miles driven tax would be each year at registration renewal they check your odometer reading. Simple and non-invasive. This would require the removal of all fuel taxes however. Of course that also means no more mail-in renewals and that would suck.

I don't want anything to do with having my vehicle inspected or mileage recorded or taken down. The current gasoline tax is fine. If enough people start going to electric, place a calculated tax on the car to make up part of the difference.

Sparky you have a cell phone now. in 10 years your house will be fully connected. To the net your cell phone and soon you will be hardwired into the system. Nothing you will be. But 1 transitor out of billions on and off when the controller commands. Everthing they are doing is to to make you a number. Remove your idenity your liberty and turn into the perfect empty shell that is a transitor. Humanity forsakin for ordered socialism

But... but... those electric car owners are THEIVES I TELL YOU!

The government is getting more and more abusive with tax dollars, and we just keep feeding and feeding. Anyone live in places with toll ways? Originally created to pay for the roadway that was built, then they realized "Oh shit, this is decent money... lets just...keep this toll way pay going " ... and no one notable ever complains because your average person is too stupid to know.

The abuse continues to plague the general middle class consumer, yet liberals encourage this kind of activity apparently.

No, liberals generally oppose this crap. There are no toll roads in California, with the exception of a couple in Southern California thanks to Republican Gov Arnold. I don't know how you east coasters put up with that crap.

I believe it is right wingers that see profit in selling their roads to foreigners.

^^ Agree, and it works btw.

i had a similar thread about taxing based on vehicle weight, and what i said was what someone said to me in response to that thread.

after i thought about it some, it made a hell of a lot more sense than trying to actually tax based on vehicle weight.

Taxing gas is also alot simpler. The tax is simply to give an incentive to drive smaller more fuel effienct cars. Also fuel efficiency and vechicle weight is linked.
