Miguel Cabrera AND Dontelle Willis to Tigers?

Anyone else hear about this on ESPN within the past hour? Talk about a steal of a trade; a Cy Young pitcher and potential Triple Crown hitter? Wow.

Only link I can find thus far: Steal

Willis won't win another Cy Young ever, you can count on that...

He'll probably be OK until hiters figure him out like they did in the NL.

Picking up Miggy is a heist though - a 24 year old Manny Ramirez.

He is still arguably a top 25 starter in all of baseball. He digressed last year but when your team doesn't want you anymore there's little to strive for.

What's bizarre is that the Angels were willing to give up the same number of players for just Cabrera 😕

Looks like a steal if Willis can bounce back and Cabrera can keep the weight off.

edit - Won't give them the crown if the Sox acquire Santana.

Yep, ESPN TV has it and now the site does too. Done deal. And they gave away nothing, typical Marlins fire sale.

Isn't Cameron Maybin supposed to be one of those five tool prospects?? Adam Miller has pretty good stuff too plus they get a few more prospects too. The Marlins can't afford to keep Miggy and they still can't get a new stadium deal. I could of sworn I read somewhere that the Marlins lease at Dolphin Stadium ends in 2010 and it won't be renewed.

This is the Tigers new lineup as far as I know:

Curtis Granderson
Placido Polanco
Miguel Cabrera
Magglio Ordonez
Gary Sheffield
Carlos Guillen
Edgar Renteria
Ivan Rodriguez
Jacque Jones

Not too shabby eh? Sheffield has got to stay healthy.

they still need bullpen help. they already had good pitching and excellent hitting. but with zumaya out for half a year thats a void they need to fill. rodney can be inconsistent and jones is getting along in age. but still, cant complain about those pick ups. and of course of all the years my team had to play detroit in interleague play, it happens to be the 2008 season. lovely. well, at least i can be grateful those two are out of the nl. 😉

Yeah, I've been hearing about it all day, but it only said preliminary talks were underway on Foxsports.

That pretty much means the entire batting order are all stars. (Granderson should have gone!)

They still need a closer, Jones and often hurt Zumaya aren't the answer.

We in Detroit have been hearing about Maybin like he was the second coming of Ty Cobb for a few years now. He is still pretty green. Miller is the real deal. He'll be very good for many years.
Believe me, Sheffield might as well put away his glove. He'll be DH forever so as to keep him from getting hurt.

Believe me, giving up Maybin and Miller is HUGE. Those 2 guys are both going to be long time all-stars. They're still really young. That being said, I love the deal for the Tigers. Cabrera is a HUGE bat at 3B (while I love Brandon Inge as a 3B, his bat is a liability), and Willis will give them a lot of innings.

Miller was nothing special in his starts this season. He's young though so who knows. To me it seems aside from Maybin, the Marlins gained a bunch of second-tier prospects; nobody anyone's been talking about at least.

Don't know what they we're thinking, the Angels seemed to be offering more value JUST for Cabrera. I'm interested to know how Dontrelle got into this deal.

I'd like to know that too. Dontrelle had his worst year yet but he looked a bit strange at times. His last couple of starts against the Mets he looked sort of wasted. His delivery was inconsistent and seemed out of gas from the get go. It was possible that he was hurt a bit or maybe he was fooling around too much (he's had a few issues like a dui last season). Maybe being in a contender and playing under Leyland will light a fire in Dontrelle. He's a gamer and is fun to watch. Sucks that he won't be hitting anymore because he has some pop in his bat. He hit 2 homers in a game against the Mets in September if I remember correctly.

Its a good deal, but Dtrain is no Cy Young. He will shit the bed in the AL. All he has is a funky windup and a fastball... The AL lineups will kill him.

Getting Miggy at 24 though, thats killer.... He is going to be very good for a very long time.

Heh don't complain, it just makes the division easier for you guys 😉

WTF you gotta make em give up Zumaya.....

Zumaya hurt himself in the offseason lifting a box at his pop's house. He is out until at least mid season 08, possibly longer. He had some hardcore surgery

Admittedly not knowing anyhing about the Angels situation, it seems the Marlins wanted to go really low on salary, maybe that's it?

Maybin and Miller are two of the top 10 prospects in all of baseball. Rabelo has decent value to the marlins who desperately needed a catcher, and they get 3 young arms which they have been looking for. I'm not really sure how Willis got lumped into this deal, but I guess with Det giving up 4 pitchers, they needed to get something valuable back. The Angels offer was certainly good, but they were unwilling to give up two pitchers along with their position prospects, maybe they never discussed expanding the deal to include Willis.

With all that said, the Marlins are a complete joke and Loria is an embarrassment to MLB. I'm sure if he was allowed to auction off his players for straight cash over prospects, he'd do it in a heartbeat.

seriously. if the sox add santana to a roster with becket, matzusaka, wakefield, lester, papelbon, schilling (?), buckholtz, and the rest... no one will stand a chance.

If they land Santana, they would lose either Buchholz or Lester... But still, it would be horrible for the rest of baseball's chances of winning it all for the next 5-6 years... That being said, there is a reason they play the games...

I think the Tigers still have some things to prove first. A great team on paper doesn't always work out on the field. This trade is only a gigantic steal if Willis pitches like he used to. It's a steal regardless because Cabrera is going to be one of the next greats.
