Midterm voting issues thread

Seeing a lot of stuff on twitter. Mostly just practical issues so far.

It's routinely astounding at how bad the nuts and bolts of American voting actually functions. Nobody of any political stripe should have to spend hours waiting in line to vote.

Polling location in Knoxville Tennessee has no power and have to resort to voting by paper causing long lines in the rain.

It's not really astounding, it's on purpose. It would be very easily to adequately fund elections so no one had to wait more than a few minutes in line but one political party believe (correctly) that the fewer people who vote the better for them.

I wonder how the Republicans pulled that one off?

Most Republican voter suppression efforts usually occur during the leadup to an election, not on election day itself.

There's no partisan slant that I detected in the OP. Most election day voter issues are the result of something you and I can both deride--sheer government incompetence!

Even in places where that isn't the case it's still can be fucked up. I've see pics from my old (extremely liberal) hood and people were in line for a couple hours.

Ugghh...this is sad. I think this is in Brooklyn? People are dropping their completed ballots in the trash and leaving in disgust.

The ballots this election are two pages connected by a perforation. Apparently if people tear them poorly they can jam the scanners.

While generally long lines at polling places are deliberate creations of corrupt officials occasionally stupidity can create them as well.

AOC tweeted this out.

Cliffs:

NY State has no early voting
NY State has no mail-in ballots
NY State does not have no-excuse absentee ballots
You can only cast a vote between 6AM and 9 PM on election day, which is not a holiday

Crown Heights Brooklyn now has a 2 hour wait to vote due to broken machines.

This is intolerable. No more of this shit.

I'm in New York but I live in Trumptard county. Everyone is a foxnews idiot around here with the yard sign to boot.
No id needed. Just walk in and sign your name in the book next to your recorded signature.
Old people running the show always gets the job done. Generally everything runs smoothly.
Love it during primaries when the old guy handling republican side sees me walk over "to the other side" and gets all pissy.
Scanners seem to work but everyone misses the old lever operated machines.
I vote in every election. In the 18 years I've gone to this polling place I never had any sort of wait. In and out in under 15 minutes.

NYC is another story.
Every line is long in NYC. Stores, DMV, Post Office, Bathroom....everything.

Voting in Crown Heights must be awesome. Between the Hasidic Jews on welfare driving cars with police sirens installed to the Caribbean folk smoking a joint on the sidewalk...
I gotta stop by the neighborhood one of these days and see how much it's changed

We really need to go to online voting or back to paper voting. Either make it easy to vote from your home or phone, or go old school with paper.

If I were benevolent dictator of the United States, every state would have mail in voting and the actual final day of the election would be a mandatory national holiday so everyone who hasn't had a chance would have plenty of time to educate themselves and turn their ballots in.

The system that most states have in 2018 is criminally bad.

Vote by mail is a really good solution here in CO. It promotes turnout so the GOP hates it, obviously.

I keep hearing from republicans THE ECONOMY IS BOOMING.
What is a so called BOOMING ECONOMY, anyway?
For whom is it booming?
Are an abundance of "low wage" job BOOMING?
Is a national debt thru the roof a BOOMING ECONOMY?
Tax reform that bypassed the middle class but enriched the top 1%, enriched the Trump kids, enriched the CEO's, is THAT BOOMING?

They say BOOMING.
I ask BOOMING for who, and do average voters feel that BOOM?
Just asking.....

Don't have a link, but voting machines in Georgia were going down because the election officials "forgot" to plug them in and the battery backups were dying. Meanwhile voters of a certain ethnic persuasion were lining up for hours out front.

When Kemp is defeated he should resign out of shame for his incompetence.

There was a Sheriff dude at my polling location, typically there are Police because parking is difficult during peak hours. Cop keeps traffic flowing.
Went mid day with no traffic problems, the sheriff guy yelled at me for using the unmarked bathroom instead of the men’s room.
I said sorry I assumed the open door meant it could be used and left.
Tough being a repressed white guy

So much this. I haven't heard a good argument yet against the Oregon approach (I know Oregon isn't the only state with mail in voting).
