Midterm in 4 hours means I need to get up in 3 1/2 or so. Should I catch some shut eye or push through and then sleep after?

if the exam is only an hour or so, fuck it, push through!

if it's a hefty 3hour test, you might wanna get some sleep

3 hour sleep is as good as nothing for me. I would just stay awake........ and play some video games. :)

A short nap might be good (30 mins) more than that and you will likely be drowsier than if you had just stayed awake.

Late response, but future reference: sleep. Energy, focus, and memory all are functioning better with just a couple hours of sleep.

depends on how long you've been up, how long the exam is, and how long you have to be awake after the exam.

generally when I was in college I didn't bother with sleep if it was for fewer than 4 hours, but it depends on the other things too.

I would have been a responsible adult and gone to bed 5 hours earlier.

I got 3.5 hours last night before my final, and it didn't go too bad.

Maybe if you had slept earlier, you would have done better.

Power nap = 20 min. I suggest just dosing on the caffeine.

I went 36 hours during my 3rd year for a 8-11 and 5-8 final so I was so wired between 11-5 in the library I couldn't even concentrate. I was surprisingly excited after my 5-8pm final and I had energy to RUN home to watch the spurs and suns game. That was hilarious though because I knocked right out after sitting down on my bed to stare at the TV. I woke up the next morning so damn refreshed and had an awesome pasta lunch. I still remember that day.

It's doable man. It's a Friday. The feeling that you're done afterwards can drive you to do anything. Get wasted afterwards btw.

Bah! Sleep is overrated.

If you don't sleep, you increase cortisol levels, which is/results in the physiological stress response. This takes mental resources away from acquiring knowledge to worrying about your wellbeing along with the natural fatigue. Along with that, if you're going to study instead of sleep, you make sense of most of the day's knowledge during REM sleep. If you don't get that, you don't consolidate info very well. It's a bad idea. Sleep is the right idea.
