My middle school yearbooks were like $15-20 each. Highschool was about $50 (but then again it was about 500 pages). College was about $60, but several hundred pages.
I don't know about you, but middle school is usually the era of a student career that most people wish to FORGET.
Junior and Senior yearbook, yes... anything else, $20 MAX.
What the heck is so cool about this yearbook that people seem to think it's worth $60? My Junior/Senior books were $40, nicely assembled and except for the fact that the 6 bitches who were in charge of it chose 80% of the pictures to be ones of them and... more of them... it was a nice yearbook. (No joke, 80% of the "candids" had at least one of them in it, and ones that didn't still had their boyfriends.)

I had good times in middle and high...9th grade was a little rocky since I moved to a new area where instead of being the 'rich' kid on the block, I was middle of the road...still even that year had great memories once I worked through the first half of it.
I got my middle school yearbook for free. My high school books were "free" (included with our registration fee).
I still fondly look back at all my yearbooks and it makes me really nostalgic. I don't remember how much they cost but I believe its worth it. A friend of mine from middle school passes away from Leukemia two years ago, she was in high school at the time, and her note in my yearbook just reminds me of what a wonderful person/friend she was. I wouldn't have that if not for the yearbook. If you kid is messy and disorganized, forget it because they'll lose it. But if they're neat and organized, get it for them because years from now, they'll look back at it and enjoy a trip down memory lane if nothing else.
My HS for 3+ years now (I observed them for 3 yrs...yearbook team has been around for like 20 years) has top-notch yearbooks with not only student pics, but also extra content, like articles and random photos. These books are hardcover and quality of printwork/paper is outstanding. My HS has ~3600 students and about 700-800 of them seniors.
Price of the book goes up as end of school year approaches. It starts at $60 and goes up to $120!

My highschool's yearbooks are 60 dollars each. However, they have a good hard cover with nice high quality paper. About half of it is in color too. Althou, I never had a reason to buy one.. we get one free senior year, so thats probably the only one I will have

Same here. Our middle school yearbooks were more like booklets. No color photos, and less than 50 pages.
My high school senior yearbook was more of a book, and I think it was around $50. I guess I bought it because it seemed like the thing to do. I prefer not to look at it, reminds me too much of...well, brings back really lousy memories.
I wish I'd seen South Park over a decade ago. The one episode where the home-schooled kids go to public school, the home school kid wonders why the guys keep ripping on Cartman.
Home Schooled Kid: "Why do you call Kyle names and laugh at him? Is he not your friend?"
Stan: "Yeah dude, but guys just do that, we rip on each other and stuff."
It's that last part that I was never aware of until sometime a few years after graduation. Knowing this form of humor/"bonding behavior" might have made school a lot easier.

Does the yearbook have business ads in it? If so, I don't see why they should be charging so much. If they don't have ads or don't have many, then they probably do have to charge that much to cover the cost. I've done yearbooks for high schools before and the most recent one was 136 pages, 16 color and the rest black and white, and the cost was around $10,500. Most of the cost was covered by selling ads to businesses, so the kids were charged $30. Same size yearbook in all color would be $13,000-$14,000, and this is from one of the more reasonable publishing companies.

man in middle school I paid $15 bucks for mine. High school I think around $50, gas also used to be less than 99 cents for 87.
That's a LOT of money for a yearbook!
I'd say high school year books are much more important than middle school; most kids want to forget their middle school years anyway. Who can blame them? That's probably the most awkward, least enjoyable section of school. Things only really start getting good in high school if you've played your cards right.
If your kid wants a yearbook really badly, perhaps you can arrange for some extra chores or something? Make them work for it; it teaches that you have to work to get the things you want. Definitely don't just shell out $60 arbitrarily for a book they'll read a few times and shelve forever; if they work for it they'll be less likely to lose it.
Having a yearbook is neat 10 years later, but it's not as big of a deal as it seems at the time you want one.

Really, all of her friends are going to have one and be signing it, it's a much bigger social thing than it seems. Yeah, the price is stupidly high but its a really fun thing to have at the end of the year and probably worth it. You can think of it as a donation to the school maybe? Besides, she'll probably annoy you if you don't sink in, so its probably not worth that effort of fighting it. If I were you, I'd have her do some chores around the house or something to earn it just so you can have her know its not a petty buy.

I believe mine was $15-$25 in middle school. I would first complain to the person in charge of the yearbooks, and tell them that the price is ridiculous considering it's only middle school. Then I'd buy one for my kid regardless.
