There's several levels to being a cook. The most basic is being able to feed yourself. This is the minimum level you need to reach before leaving home. You have failed. Do not pass go, do not collect $200.

OP: Learn to use a freaking stove. It's not that hard. If you make rice a lot, then get a rice cooker. They're cheap and even more idiot proof than the microwave.
 
Perhaps in whatever pink skied fairy tale planet you live on. Cooking for yourself (with a stove and oven) is a basic skill like making your bed, washing your clothes, washing the dishes. This is something you NEED to know not, something you can slide on. Suck it up and learn the skills you should have had before you got out of HS.
if a guy can't use a microwave without melting down plastic, do you really want to encourage him to involve an open flame?

I can't think of anything prepared in a microwave that wouldn't taste better coming from a stove or an oven, but if your only goal is to intake calories and stay alive, go for it.

True, the extent of the failure is Brobdingnagian. To have developed such an attitude means failure on behalf of the OP's Mother, Father, school, church and any concerned adult within a mile radius. Perhaps gene therapy or intervention by Chef Ramsey. Such a waste of a perfectly good human. Will no one think of the gastronomes?
 
My first roommate got angry at me because his toast burned 3 times since I turned up the adjustment knob and his mom didn't tell him to check that before toasting his bread. Idiot!
 
What likely happen is it became too hot for the container causing it to melt and the water to spill out. You sure you used a microwave safe container?
 
Wow...28 minutes seems like a LONG time.

I cook rice, chicken, and vegetables in the microwave for our dogs all the time.

1 cup of white rice, 1 cup of water, 1 cup of frozen vegetables, 1/2 frozen chicken breast. Soak 10 minutes, microwave on high for 12-13 minutes...

28 minutes seems like a VERY long time.

Don't forget to tell him not to use the rice cooker submersed in the bathtub while taking a bath. Or in a swimming pool while taking a swim.
 
Add me to the list of people amazed that it recommends 25-28 minutes in the microwave. I'm guessing the too-small container allowed the water to boil over, which meant meltdown after there was no more water to absorb the microwave energy.

There isn't anything that gets placed into the microwave for 28 minutes. This is impossible. Thawing meat in the microwave doesn't even take 10 minutes. In fact, it starts to cook at around 6 minutes.

You must have read the directions wrong.
 
Why is this even a question? The bowl was way too small as other posters said.

The water boiled over and out. End of story.

There's no way the OP made this rice the same way before, imo. It just won't work. It will boil over and burn every time with such a small bowl.
 
if you're too lazy to take out a pot and put water in it, cook for 25 minutes, then your generation is a failure. all of you. 🙁

I don't know how old OP is but he's probably around the same age as me. Please don't lump us all together! I only use the microwave to heat up leftovers and melt butter or chocolate sometimes. I make my own pasta from scratch!
 
One time my friends little brother attempted to microwave macaroni and cheese, so the first step was to put the noodles and water in the microwave. He forgot the water and his kitchen smelled like burnt shit for about two months.

It looks like you suffered from boilover. You need a bigger bowl to cook it in.

Using the microwave for rice is perfectly acceptable. There are times when using the stove is inconvenient. If im outside grilling, but want a rice side dish, I can add the ingredients to a bowl, set it for 25 minutes or so and not have to worry about running in and out of the house to check the stove.

since you don't mind eating shitty rice go get the uncle bens 5 min rice. boil water put in rice. 5 min later good rice.

take half the time and 10x better.
 
... uh, yeah, 2.5 cups of water + rice in a 3.125 cup container? My vote is for boil-over. Bye-bye water, hello fire.

They tell you 2 quart for a reason.

That would be my thought too. Some of the water/rice boiled over and then dried out. Once it dried out it started to smoke.

28 minutes seems like a loooooong time though.

I'm sorry, but our conclusion has already been made. We have neither the time nor energy to make informed decisions around here. Once you are categorized and a member of your group causes a particular generalization to be formed, that's it, you're labeled. If only you had come forth with this useful information earlier....
 
I see you posted the directions which did save your ass from some ridicule.
But, never ever ever have I seen directions that length for microwaving something like that.

I would have realized this and not cooked it that long, but I guess you aren't much of a cook and just took the directions verbatim.
