That's still not right. I don't know what to tell you other than to install 32bit WinXP for the mean time.

On a side note, has anyone tired getting ahold of a 64bit complier? Intel's stuff is $400 of course, but all of Microsoft's stuff is locked up tight: VS 2003 requires the Driver Dev Kit, and VS 2005 won't install over the web, which requires a CD, which requires an MSDN subscription.

So, yeah... i installed 32bit version of windowsXP and tried installing the onboard gigabit lan again, but is still won't work. i used the drivers that came with the motherboard driver disk, their digitally signed, but i still get the same " device cannot start (code 10)" message!

Just what I thought, the device ID is flat out incorrect. I'm highly suspect that your motherboard is bad - devices changing IDs are common if they've become damaged.

Just for reference BTW, the public version that MS is offering is no longer the current version. The private beta testers are up to build 1247 as of later last month, but since MS has gone from using a single key to a full-fledged activation system, it's not going to be like previous releases where the public can get their hands on it via unofficial channels.:(

everyone still having issues with drivers? I'm getting my new system on Thursday, it's an AMD Athlon 64 3800. Wonder if I went to the 64 bit version if it would give me troubles when playing Half Life 2 :p

I've had my machine and and running on dual-boot XPProSp2/Xp64 and everything is silky smooth. Even play DOOM3 on both, no problems (just install on 32bit and then on the 64bit install simply map all the drives the same, everything worked). Good luck w/ it!

Just curious, how much difference do you notice playing the games between 32-bit and 64-bit? Enough to reboot?

Same Here. Should have all the new parts in for a build next week.
3 questions
1 did you install xp and xp64 on the same drive? or different logical drives?
2 dos office xp run well on xp 64 any speed differance?
3 what about video drivers and games are the faster?

KCBALTZ - haven't played enough yet. I will let you know in a bit. I would guess that 32 would prob be better simply because the drivers have been optimized there where as A64 drivers are not yet perfect.

SPARKY19692 - answers to questions:

1) Same physical SATA drive, diff logical. I mapped the XP64 to "X" on the XP install. The XP install cannot be remapped in the XP64 install since its a BOOT device.
2) Will be installing office2003 (my office XP copy has a corrupted excel install), but right now everything runs at about the same speed
3) I noticed a bit more jumping when I played Doom3 on A64 - but that could be for a variety of reasons. Have not pushed both that hard as of yet.

Cheers -
Jerome

Looks like its going to be a long wait for 64bit drivers to become common place. Kinda reminds me of waiting on Win2K drivers when it came out. Growing pains.

Would it be a good idea to use this as a boot operating system? Kinda like a temporary thing before I get winxp pro. I wouldn't think so because of driver problems and bugs, but I don't really know...

I wouldn't ... simply because if you install it as the primary OS, it will "own" the c: drive (boot). Your winxp pro would have to be installed on anything but c:. Doesn't mean much that I could think of right now - simply used to having my primary OS on c: (and so are most people). Then again, Unix doesn't even use the drive mapping and has mount points. From that perspective - it's easier to swallow :)

WinXP64 Update:

RC1 (build 1289) was released to beta testers today, I just got my email a few minutes ago and am downloading it now. When I get home from shift tonight I'll install it along side my XP Pro install and give it a whirl with the latest set of drivers I've put together for my system.

Care to hear feedback? I won't post anything that violates NDA but I can give my take on it's maturity if you like.

Megatomic - sure! Hey, quick question for Best testers ... how did you get in? I downloaded it early but was never invited to the "club"... :(

I've been in the program since the days of Win98 SE. I filled out an application right after Win98 was released and I was accepted midway into the Win98 SE program. I've tested all non-server OS releases, all WU, and even DX since then. I've not paid for an OS since I bought Win98.

Damn you! I'd give things that were not mine to get ahold of the RC.:p

Anyhow, the big question I have is: how is memory usage? With 1218, it's managing to eat up nearly half a gig of my 1GB memory installation just on bootup; WinXP32 even with some extra crap loaded is only at 200MB.

I'll address that specifically for you ViRGE. :) I can't wait to get home and install it.

I won't get home until 1:15am so don't expect an update from me on this until at least 2am.

ViRGE, so my system has about 700MB of my 1GB free after boot up and all the services have started. Aside from drivers no other apps have been installed yet.
