This is no where near the dumbest purchase. Have you forgotten Time Warner purchase of AOL? Or AtHome purchase of BlueMountain.com. Or how about Yahoo purchase of Broadcast.com. I can go on and on. Dumbest purchases were made during the Dotcom bubble when companies were paying with Monopoly money. This is pocket change and terrific purchase for Microsoft compared to the above examples.
 
Minecraft would have been a nice bundle with Windows 95.

The graphics don't make the game. Its how the game makes you feel. Its relaxing. Make your own little house. Hang out with friends. Build whatever you want. Keep digging until you hit the bottom. Finally hack your way out of the jungle. Explore until you get lost and eventually find your way back. Its like an exploration game. I slowly "civilize" the whole map. What seemed like this huge untacklable world at first is now just a short walk away from the nearest minecart rail home. You can take a jungle path you made where before you'd have gotten seriously lost. It requires creativity in how you solve the most basic of problems, like getting lost, how to manage your items and keep them safe, how to travel around, etc.

I'm by no means a minecrafter but I built up and explored a map or two until I was satisfied. Nothing fancy. The people who are like "I'm going to make a 1,500 room castle" are the people who get stuck playing it way too much.

I hope not. 🙁 People bash minecraft but at this point it is no longer about the game itself, it's working on the Argo principal now. There are so many amazing mods for it.

Notch's company Mojang has the coders and IP to the other games such as Scrolls. They are making other games. With mojang's recent crackdown on modding APIs I'm not sure the company would change much, but the community would get worse than it is. Instead of a bunch of stupid kids and a few good, inspired people you'd have a ton of stupid kids. I wouldn't mind seeing minecraft in C++ though.
 
I played on my nephew's kindle and got absorbed for hours. I could see getting more into this game at some point.
 
Personally I find the fact that they used java really limits it. I have a small server I run that me and some friends sometimes hop on but the map has gotten huge and it just bogs right down. Java is just not efficient for this type of thing.

Sounds like you're talking about Android.

Why would they do that? The beauty of minecraft is you can play it on practically any computer no matter the specs. Also, the block look is what separated minecraft from every other game in today's market. That's the appeal and why it was so successful.

I don't think MS will change much.

It looks like the deal is purchasing Mojang outright, which basically is Minecraft since no one really gives a fuck about Scrolls or Cobalt. It looks like they have $205 million in assets and made $115 million in profit last year. I bet they are making a bit of money with Lego right now and are only going to rake in more. There have been four sets in the past couple years but Lego is going to put Minecraft Lego sets in their main toy line. Six more are coming out this fall and they are probably going to be some of the hottest toys this Christmas. It could actually rival Lego Star Wars.

I think the community is souring on Notch lately but it has nothing to do with modding APIs. Basically, he doesn't want server owners selling items or abilities to players. That will cripple a lot of servers and going to piss some people off, but it's understandable. Minecraft has popped up a cottage industry around it. The Bukkit team was going to kill Bukkit until Mojang actually informed them that they actually own Bukkit so they can't kill it, which just shows how the whole thing is a bunch of amateurs. When Mojang hired some of the original Bukkit devs, they actually bought Bukkit as well but they never announced it or told the remaining Bukkit devs. I actually don't think they need to do a lot for a Minecraft 2 except overhaul it to make it run better. Despite it's graphics, it's a pretty big CPU hog for computers and destroys servers.

I do worry in general that the moding won't work as well. The Xbox One can actually run Windows8/Windows Phone apps so you could have updates go almost simultaneously on all platforms. That means they could have a different Minecraft in the app store than the full Minecraft. If there was a way to make a Minecraft Metro app just as moddable as the current Minecraft, that could be amazing. I just don't know if Microsoft would put the same effort into supporting/allowing mods as Mojang does now. At least EA didn't buy it because you could just say goodbye to mods right then. I loved Battlefield 1942 so much because of the mods like Desert Combat, Pirate, Forgotten Hope, but it all went to shit once EA took control. The game itself interested me for a bit, but the mods are what kept me in.

At least Mojang has quite a bit of assets and is generating quite a bit of cash. I mean, Facebook bought Whatsapp for $19 billion and Oculus for $2 billion. If they had bought Mojang before the PS4 version came out, they really could have created a reason to sell some XB1s and get kids into the Xbox (and in Microsoft hopes the Windows) ecosystem. Microsoft has a giant wad of overseas cash and a need to get kids to want an XB1. They probably overpaid, but it's a better purchase than Oculus Rift for the same price.

Completely disagree. Minecraft has already peaked, VR is still in the development stage and will really take off after the consumer model comes out. Minecraft is just a game, VR can be applied to so many different industries beyond gaming.

The crap graphics are part of the reason I never played it. The game just seemed unfinished overall. More like a tech demo.

Then you missed out. It's not about the graphics (and tech demos are usually more focused on graphics than anything else), it's basically a virtual LEGO world, that you can play alone or with your friends, building, exploring, or just messing around. It is THE sandbox game.

I don't believe it. No one uses chrome or opera, and firefox is at best, second rate to IE. It has a clunky interface, renders pages slower, opens slower.. ugh

I believe it. Last 3 places I've worked, everyone used Chrome or Firefox, and IE was only used by the extremely tech illiterate or for corporate applications that only supported IE.

Let's also not forget a lot of schools also recommend Firefox or Chrome and actually say not to use IE.

What is it, 25% of the world is still on XP, and that 25% now knows limitations and lack of support for IE6 through IE8.

Over the years the constant bombardment of IE "magically" adding on more and more toolbars, has led more to take advice and switch browsers.

More and more sites simply work better in Chrome & Firefox - what I mean is, everyone who is in web development HATES IE with a passion, they create sites using Chrome or Firefox (largely because of firebug or the developer tools built into Chrome) and fudge together support for IE, and it's a pain because you have to make adjustments to what you do to make it IE6/IE7/IE8/IE9/IE10/etc. compatible all at once. IE will not stick to standards, and changes too much from browser to browser that website developers hate it. Just last week I was helping someone who could not pull up certain emails on Comcast's webmail interface with IE. Worked fine in Chrome. This person will now use Chrome probably forever.

And lastly, more and more web traffic is going mobile, and nobody buys Windows mobile devices, it's idevices and androids, meaning safari and chrome.
 
Starcraft 2 cost under $100 million to develop. You can create the entire suite of blizzard games for less than $2B.
If starcraft was 100MM I'm sure WoW alone would take 1-2B alone to recreate. There's an incredible amount of content built up over the years.
