Given that both are new generation of tech toys, which one sold you on WOW factor? Which one is more innovative to you? And which one would you actually get if you only get to pick one?

I can see why they're being compared though. The first thing that came to my mind when I saw Surface was "Wow, a giant iPhone!"

A $10,000 store kiosk vs. a $600 cellphone. Come on.

EDIT: Well, I guess we could have a valid competition by asking "which is more overpriced?"

EDIT 2: My vote goes to the Lexus LS 460L, it has a touchscreen too!

Except it can do much much more. If I recall correctly, surface allows for 52 simultaneous 'touches' while the iPhone allows for two. Surface will also sync with any object that is placed on it, and allows you to manipulate a number of things in real time.

Note that I said "the first thing that came to my mind". I know they're vastly different and honestly Surface is way cooler, but I can see where he's coming from.

Surface is much more innovative and could possibly revolutionize a lot more things. iPhone is pretty much like any other smartphone out there, except Jobs seems to think using your fingers on the screen is more innovative than a pen.

Microsoft Surface is a practicle application of this rather new touch surface technology. The i phone is just a phone. Microsoft in their advertisements have shown very practicle money making uses (for them) with this application. I though of a couple my self after watching this advertisement. And, since it's microsoft everybody knows how important it is.

Is the touchscreen on the iphone made the same as touchscreens that are on some laptops?

I believe the touchscreens are totally different between the iphone and surface. The reason why Microsoft Surface is such a big deal because of a relatively new Touch Screen Technology. If you read furhter into Microsoft Surface. The surface uses a MULTI-POINT technology where the screen can sense more then one contact point made by the user. The I phone uses a traditional touch screen with Icons you simple touch.

Its not traditional on the iPhone. It detects two points of contact, not one. Surface detects many more points of contact... as stated by effowe, he believes its 52 points.

No, the iPhone can recognize 2 simultaneous inputs.

How are these two products remotely comparable?

Similar input methods.
My vote still goes to the Lexus.

More info on surface.

Yeah it's 52. They also use multiple infrared cameras to pick up touch and objects. Pretty cool technology, and it's all running on modern hardware, nothing huge. It will still be a few years before consumers will get to use it in home due to the ridiculous price tag, but commercial uses are vast, and I can't wait to try one out. Cleaning the greasy fingerprints off those won't be too fun, though.

I guess I never really considered the iPhone touchscreen to be novel. The Microsoft Surface can do much more complicated things with multi-touch.
