hahaha awesome. But, the redesigned, even though it contained a bunch of crap, actually looked GOOD. I'm actually among the few who likes organized content, and the creator did a pretty good job of it haha.

IPOD box is ok, but it looks a bit tooo plain. but of course, it has to stay on cue w/ the product's design as well.

designing a hardware box != designing a box for software.

NAME ONE SOFTWARE that looks like an ipod box :/

Organized content and too much content are two different things. Graphic Designers have to find that sweet spot, that point where it still remains visually attractive yet sells what it needs to sell to you. The whole beast of graphic design isn't drawing some stupid pic or whatever, it is figuring out the most effective way of presenting that information to you.

Not to be some kind of Apple fanboy (because this is completely about package design, not functionality), but Apple's marketing and graphic design team truly is better than Microsofts. Take a look at the package designs (for SOFTWARE):

OS X Tiger
Logic Pro 7
Final Cut Studio
Shake 4
WebObjects 5.2
Xsan
Aperture

I could go on, but you see my point. Software, hardware, it is all product that needs selling in the long run. I realize that I am arguing design and aesthetics with a more technical minded crowd, but it simply is one of those things that you have to consider. There is a balancing act between too much info and not enough, go overboard the entire design goes to hell. A well designed box like the ones above gives the buyer a sense of a more sophisticated, refined, and all around professional product than one with that is laden with stickers and too much BUY ME BUY ME. A picture is worth a thousand words.

heh I agree. I actually like the "informative/technical" look of the box. Apple's simplistic and artistic design looks good too. Either way though, I don't base my purchase on packaging.

I dont give a rats ass what a box looks like. It doesn't make for a better product.

Also personally dont care what the product itself looks like. Or if its clean, or scratched, or dented, or taped.

Umm, you could do this with any software company. I don't find the funny in this one. That's just how Microsoft labels their packages, so what? Labeling software like Office or WinXP requires more info than a simple piece of hardware that plays music.

Microsoft has a tendency to rip off other company's software. DOS? Stolen from Unix. MS Windows? Rip off of the Mac interface. Etc.

wtf? get your facts straight?

and whocares? microsoft did an arguably better job. Their business practice lead them to be extremely successful.

DOS wasn't stolen, it was bought (from Seattle Comp..or something. QDOS, meaning Quick and Dirty OS). although i never knew DOS was stolen from UNIX? umm... unless you're talking about the VI crap...? I highly doubt DOS is a derivative of vi. no idea where you got taht idea. just your head making the connection?

as for GUI's, that idea was already common ideas. "ohh ya apple was the first company to use GUI's widespreadly, so anyone else who implements it afterwards are imitators.."

apple stole the 2 button mouse from PCs
