microsoft has re-released the SMT patch for bulldozer cpu's. its now as two files. technpowerup has done a review and on the hole expect roughly 10% improvement in preformance. once window 8 launches another 10% on top of that.
while it doesnt solve her problems it does help reduce the stinging.
http://www.techpowerup.com/158534/New-Windows-7-Bulldozer-Patches-Available..html
both files can be downloaded there if you so wish. though more than likely nobody here will bother

AFAIK there won't be any additional improvements with Win 8. This just backports the Bulldozer specific optimizations in Win 8 to Win 7.

And yeah it's nothing game changing, but helps with one of the areas people were especially disappointed with Bulldozer, which is lightly threaded performance.

Are you sure about that? It looks to me like they just quoted what AMD said, and we all know how reliable AMD's word is.

TPU said:
According to the AMD blog these patches seem to offer little more then a 10% boost but the do improve over all performance.

Also, the quote didn't say that Windows 8 would add 10% on top of the new Windows 7 patches. This is what the quote said:

AMD Blog said:
In initial testing of the upcoming Windows 8 operating system, we’ve seen performance improvements of up to 10% in some applications, when compared to Windows 7.

I'm pretty sure that that meant 10% improvement over unpatched Windows 7.

EDIT:
Here's another quote from AMD that was not included in the TPU article:
Our testing shows that not every application realizes a performance boost. In fact, heavily threaded apps (those designed to use all 8 cores), get little or no uplift from this hotfix – they are already maxing out the processor. In other cases, the uplift averages out to a 1-2 percent uplift.
This is more inline with what I'm expecting. In summary:
  • 10% max improvement on certain loads
  • No change in heavily threaded programs
  • 1-2% average improvement

So... SB, BD owners noticed positive changes, even athlons performance imrpoved. Why not add this hotfix to windows updater, damn it..?

Downloading this hotfix for my mobile AMD Turion X2 TL-50 1.6ghz. Windows 7 64bit. Who knows, I might get a 1% performance increase..

Im seeing framerate improvements in BF3 even with my Athlon2 X2 250 so I think some people are downplaying the significance of this fix. It is a good fix.

It's the worst possible timing too, because of CES. Or maybe it was to be announced there.

Let's see which of the review sites will rise to the occasion and go the extra mile to update their testing results.

Damage has already been done in my book. The biggest AMD fangirl I know is already looking at an Intel upgrade. I'm so proud of her. :awe:

I'm still a fan of the X6 1090T and the current Opteron processors. Also the Fusion stuff beats the pants off Intel for offering cheap video/graphics performance, good battery life and reasonable CPU for most folks.

As for bulldozer, I'm not going to touch that steaming pile of fail.

I'm eagerly awaiting Trinity myself. That's going to go into my next laptop, where performance isn't something I'm openly looking for.

A WoW box/emulator-station on the go is just what I need.

Hope this does something...I just got a FX6100.

Yes yes I know, I should have got a Phenom 2 or 2500K. :)

Lol, same here. Install on all non BD systems and seeing slight improvements. Even Intel. It's a fix for windows so should install with any cpu.

Why didn't you just keep the Phenom II in your sig? The 1055 is no slouch.

I was going to...but when I put my AM2+ mobo up for sale everyone asked for a CPU with it...so I ended up selling it as well. I have the 6100 at 4.4GHz at 1.415v so not too bad. My 1055 could only do 3.8GHz at 1.475v unfortunately. 4GHz required too much voltage and temps got out of control.

Part of one of the fixes , changes the windows power profile to Performance.
Where as the stock setting on a user's system is balanced.
Mainly the setting that effects bulldozer is the Processor Power management.
Under Advanced settings.
The minimum processor state is set to 60%.
This turns down the multiplier on my system. With bulldozer's modules, core setup. Things probably don't bounce back from these power saving states correctly.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2646060
This article introduces an update that enables the hotfix installer to selectively disable the Core Parking feature in Windows 7 or in Windows Server 2008 R2 if an AMD FX, AMD Opteron 4200 Series, or AMD Opteron 6200 Series processor is installed.

Currently, the CPU Power Policies that are used by Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 are not optimized for the dual core AMD Bulldozer module architecture. This architecture is found on AMD FX series, AMD Opteron 4200 Series, and AMD Opteron 6200 Series processors. This can result in decreased system performance with multithreaded workloads in lightly-threaded environments.

When this update is installed, Bulldozer modules will be less likely to achieve the C6 power state. This potentially results in increased power consumption in more lightly-threaded environments.

Important If you apply this update, you cannot revert the settings by uninstalling this update. This update should only be installed on computers that have KB2645594 installed.

Pics or it didn't happen.

I tried using this on an i7-2670QM laptop and it didn't work.

I'm trying to find the site, I think it was techpowerup forums. You first need the direct links to download the patch and install.

But like the guy said above, it's probably because of the core parking they disabled within windows, thats' why non BD users might see a difference.

Okay i'm an idiot ha, the link is on this page. Worked on my intel system

If this is also working on other AMD machines I wonder how much performance would improve on a Phenom 9750 :hmm:.

Oh no, please not another cool-and-quiet phenom-style power management issue...surely AMD has got it right by now, right?

The scarier thing is performance/watt is supposed to be one of the selling points! I am really hoping Toms and Anand re-do some benchmarks with the patch.

Very interested in seeing what this does to BD's efficiency...
