Windows Media Player released a plus pack the other day, that can be found here and it came with some really nice programs such as a thing that organizes your music acording to the ID3 tag of Artist and Album. Anyway, another part of that is a thing that lets you convert winamp skins to WMP skins so that WMP looks exactly like Winamp. Its crazy. I still choose Winamp but WMP is nice now because it has a lot of features but thats also its downfall. It has too many features that make it not simple and take up too many resources.

I will stick with my WMP 6.4 because I hate having to wait for a video to load.

WMP is too much of a resource hog - that and it's just too cluttered. Winamp is simple and easy to use and takes up minimal resources - MS has a long way to go if they want to unseat Winamp.

Well, Winamp is now owned by AOL, so it is just a matter of time before it gets all screwed up.

trying?

there's no reason to get all up in arms over this. the reason netscape fell was because there came a point at which it really sucked compared to IE. unless that happens to winamp, there's no reason to worry.

Agreed. From what I've seen of Winamp 3 (Beta 2), I can only say that for playing audio, Winamp is still the best choice. W(I)MP is just too much of a resource hog to be useful for such things. I personally find WMP 6.4 to be the last acceptable version of WMP to play videos with.

so true... I also use WMP 6.4 for video and Winamp for the rest.

Besides it isn't new that a company makes winampskins compatible to their product. I have an MP3 programm on my Mac that can use Winamp skins, it's only because now it's Microsoft that offers compatability that everybody gets up in arms.

You're right. I agree that I.E is much better than Netscape.

My point was that MS are not coming up with new creative products, but just putting up things that already exist in order to compete and 'kill' off others.

IE --> Netscape
MSN --> ICQ
Frontpage --> Homesite and others
C# --> Java
ASP.NET concept --> J2EE concept
...etc

ah i see, yes i agree with you then :)

i love c#. i haven't used enough of it to love it for it's virtues, but i love the story behind it - that it was more or less created by microsoft to piss SUN off. hehe.

imitation is a good route to success, imho. look at all those japanese companies. they let other people come up with ideas, then they go and perfect it.

having said that, i think there are a few areas ms should get the hell out of, because they're not going to win there. one is messaging... icq and aim are too strong there.

Well, I do like C# if you ask me ;)

The good thing about MS is that they make things easier for people, but not necessarily the best product ;)

you dont think there are creative people there?

what about .NET? all the features and tools for OFfice, Visual Studio etc. there are soo many products coming out ms that are just cloned by others. If ms does something similar its only because they feel there is room for improvement and they can make a better version.

Yay.

I use 6.4 also, it loads instantly, unlike the ugly bloated new version. Why should I use that? What advantages does it have? I haven't seen any. Do not worry about Winamp, it is fine. It is still currently the best solution for audio playback.

As for instant messengers - ICQ is still the best. Messenger, like Windows XP, is targeted at teenie-boppers and people who do not see technical inferiority. ICQ has so many advantages over MSN that it makes me sick to think that a lot of people actually use MSN and don't like ICQ. But that's fine, to each their own. ICQ has been around for what, 5 or 6 years? All I know is I've been using it since I was about 12 or 13, and I am turning 18, so it's definitely 5 years (I started using it when it was at version ICQ 98).

Ok, maybe saying that there are no creative people there is too strong. ;)

The .NET concept is similar to the J2EE concept developed by SUN.

I'm not sure about Office and Visual Studio though, cos I am not familiar with similar tools used on other OS platforms. So I don't have any arguments here. ;)

well i don't think you can say the components of office are creative, but ms has done a very nice job with integration and whatnot.
