M$ typically gives companies an option: Let us assimilate you, or be destroyed. Its happened more than you think. If they make a product exactly like winamp, you wont buy Winamp, and they'll go under. Although M$ doesnt make money off of WMP, it still gives people another reason to be dependent on thier worthless OS.

I agree with BustaRhyme. Cry about it, or use something else. You have a choice now. Either deal with all the crap that comes with being dependent on M$, or use something superior (just about anything).

<< My point was that MS are not coming up with new creative products, but just putting up things that already exist in order to compete and 'kill' off others. >>

How many companies are truly innovative by this definition? How many companies implement their "innovations" through creative means *facilitated by* MS? I guess they're not creative, as they're using MS' platform, etc..

<< IE --> Netscape >>

and Netscape --> Lynx? Netscape didn't really innovate anything, they just created a better Lynx. Microsoft didn't really innovate anything, they just created a better Netscape.

<< MSN --> ICQ >>

What's so original about messaging? ICQ didn't create anything original, they just made a better winpopup.

<< Frontpage --> Homesite and others >>

Umm, actually, Frontpage was purchased by MS from an individual who created it long before Homesite.

<< C# --> Java >>

And Java --> C++ --> C. What's your point here?

<< ASP.NET concept --> J2EE concept >>

You're comparing ASP.NET to J2EE? Hmmmm...

I don't see you mentioning Sun's "new" "SUN ONE." "SUN ONE" --> ".NET" ? Is it only significant if it allows one to slander MS?

First rule of engineering; don't reinvent the wheel, make it better. I'm being a little facetious on the above statements, I'm just trying to make a point. There are very, very few companies who truly create original ideas, and not a single one of them create these ideas without any reflection on someone elses ideas/creations.

<< Windows Media Player released a plus pack the other day, that can be found here and it came with some really nice programs such as a thing that organizes your music acording to the ID3 tag of Artist and Album. Anyway, another part of that is a thing that lets you convert winamp skins to WMP skins so that WMP looks exactly like Winamp. Its crazy. I still choose Winamp but WMP is nice now because it has a lot of features but thats also its downfall. It has too many features that make it not simple and take up too many resources. >>

Oh my!.. Please no!.. The day this happens will also be the day I'll ditch WinAmp.

When MS or AOL takes over something it ruins whatever it is that they're taking in my opinion.

ICQ was GREAT until the year 2000 when AOL took it over per contract they had with Mirabilis.
My ISP was pretty good until MSN took it over.

<< The .NET concept is similar to the J2EE concept developed by SUN. >>

Before .NET Microsoft pushed the "Windows DNA" concept. I don't know when Microsoft officially "launched" Windows DNA, nor do I know when Sun officially "launched" J2EE, so I can't say who was first. However, the foundation of Windows DNA was COM. J2EE has JavaBeans, which is obviously derived from the concept of COM.

Have you tried beta winamp3? I don't like it at all. Just to continue the discussion, yes Realplayer sucks. Aol sucks. ICQ has always sucked. WMP (6.4 actually on mine) for video, winamp for eveything else.

Actually, Netscape is a huge leap from Lynx, and Internet Explorer evolved from Mosiac, not Netscape. And they didn't just create a better Netscape, up until version 4.0 Netscape was the more popular browser

I really dont underestand why some people hate microsoft that much, their OSs have terrible stability but they have at least an easy interface.

I havent know somebody that hasnt learnt from a microsoft OS.
Anyway their comercial politics are evil, but come on, everybody wants to get a better company these days, so i wouldnt expect some charity cooming from them.

I currently use a lot of Linux and i like it a lot, much more than the windows os, but, for me, under a linux OS it would be impossible to learn how to use it from scratch.

Maybe i went of topic, just wanted to say this :).

I noted I was being a little facetious, I was just making a point that in the browser arena, MS simply made a better one.

I use WMP 6.4 for video (just load the DivX codecs), and don't see a reason to upgrade this. In fact, come to think of it, I really don't know what the reason is to "upgrade" to the more bloated 7.x version?

I have always used Winamp, thats what I first introduced to. I have tried other Mp3 players and the only other one I really like is Sonique but its kinda a resource hog.

I use Winamp cuz its nice and simple :)
I dont see the point of those other ones with that screen showing all that funky sh!t. I use it for music.
If i wanna see some weird sh!t, i'll just head on over to walmat ;)
