I'm pretty sure the devs who wrote the OS are familiar with it, thank you capt. obvious.

Even then, you'd be surprised. ;)

Generalizing it either way is a mistake -- some people don't care about IT or computers but can program, some people are through and through nerds and know more about it.

In any case, the OP has an amusingly quaint tone as far as even asking if MS would need tech support.

Yes, Microsoft has a very extensive Global IT Department. In fact they have the best IT dept i have ever seen. They have round the clock monitoring on all internal servers and tools for all locations around the world. (they have something like 50 domain forests of servers around the world with thousands of servers in total) Most of the work they do goes to providing excellent tools so that people can do stuff themselves without engaging the help desk, hence they have a bunch of developers working for them as well as ops people.

Yes all employees have local administrator rights on their boxes but you can't access anything unless your machine is a part of the domain. The IT folks get what every access they need through the domain level ACLs.

They do not restrict doing anything to your boxes. in fact its fairly common if people want they can add hardware to their own machines. When i was working in networking i had about 10 machines and each had on average 4-8 nics that i put in myself. If i didnt want to do it myself i could call and get someone to do it for me but most people are savvy enough to handle it themselves.

so yes, the IT folks are very smart, most people at the company are which makes stuff run a lot smoother then other companies.

Wow you answered it all for me. Thanks! I'm so frustrated at work here because they restrict almost everything. No local admin is killing me....

That's not true... at all. It might be true in some cases

Huh?

, it's certainly not the case for most. Programmers have to have knowledge of nearly everything in most cases.

Yes it is. Programers aren't going to know how to fix the mail server, graphic designers aren't going to know how the SQL server works, etc. I've worked at 2 Fortune 500 companies in the last 11 years, and this is the way it is in the corporate world. Heck, a lot of coders don't even know how to use a computer outside of work...it's amazing. If they're out of their element, they dont know where the power button is!
