Across China thousands of computer screens are turning dark. The reason is a piece of software from a US firm.

Software giant Microsoft is deactivating unauthorised copies of its Windows operating system, in a nation where 82% of all software is pirated ? even if many end users do not know it.

The deployment of Windows Genuine Advantage in China has sparked outrage from computer users all over the country. If a validation test is failed, the software changes the desktop background to a black screen every 60 minutes and displays constant warning messages.

Some users fear that their data is at risk because the package can disable some Windows features. The package has been used in many other parts of the world for several years, but was only enabled for Chinese language systems this month.

Dong Zhengwei, a Beijing lawyer claims in the China Daily that Microsoft's action could even be illegal under Chinese law. He calls the company the "biggest hacker in China with its intrusion into users' computer systems without their agreement or any judicial authority".

Zhengwei is one of many that say the crackdown unfairly harms users unable to know if the software they bought was genuine. Others claim Microsoft's high prices are responsible for the problem.

The software giant defends its use of the program, saying its goal is to "help our customers to determine (if) genuine software is installed on their computers," Microsoft told Reuters.

Don;t see the problem. Its their software and if you did not pay they try and fight you. Of course hackers will just fight back and load a "update" to a torrent site somewhere.

Yeah.

Guess they shouldn't be using automatic updates....

Well if MS keeps it up and they all switch over to Mac then there will be about 1.1 billion people using it, granted 1 billion of them will be illegal China copies. ;)

I think this is a great idea. 60 minutes is too much time. It should be reduced to 15.

When you run pirated software, the discount in price (paying $0) come at a risk that shit will stop working and you'll lose all your data.

If you don't want that risk, pay for the licensing.

This will never happen. Chinese people aren't into buying hardware that does the same thing for twice the price. Look at their habits. They won't even spend $80 to buy a legal copy of XP.

This. I have all genuine versions but I'll be damned if I am going to let MS check or not.

Not only do you have to download and install the update, you have to AGREE on a page to have this installed.

Yep, just part of the game.

It's too bad some of those people don't even realize they're playing.:)

Good for Microsoft. You pirate the software, you have no right to bitch about it getting disabled.

WTF.. "Could be breaking Chinese law because they didn't know that they where buying illegal copies" my ass.

Who sells computers with illegal copies of windows.. lets see..

dell: no
gateway: no
HP: no
compaq: no
Acer: no
Lenovo: no
IBM: no
Toshiba: no
Sony: no

So where are they buying these computers from, unknowing that the software on them is illegal? From Chun Pow, the neighbor kid up the street that is a leet computer builder? Maybe they should try to get their computers from trusted sources?

I currently work in retail and can say that *most Asian customers seem to know everything and nothing at all.
Must be that their ignorance is catching up to them. And now they are putting the blame on someone else. Anything to get the cheaper price..

MS should have done this sooner.

You mean they'll switch over to the Nac. China will have the console market locked up with the Vii and soon the personal computer as well.

That's why AT forums have ads located throughout the site.
