Wow. You really like to pay for software? How much are you paying AT for using the forums?
I own windows xp but Ubuntu is my main OS and has been for 7 months now.

I don't mind paying for good products. Windows XP is a good product.

And the people in the PRC can do the same.

Exactly. If people wand a free OS, there are plenty out there. If you want to use a MS OS, pay for the license and don't go bitching when your pirated copy stops working because of WGA.

Good I am glad they are doing this.

China has had a free ride for way too long. They should risk losing their data, they are STEALING.

Violates Chinese law, my ass. Its microsofts program that they stole.

Anandtech isn't just run for "fun". I have about 5 total windows licenses at home (currently using 2) and will keep buying them, and Ubuntu on my laptop, and OSX on the wife's laptop.

If you don't want that risk, pay for the licensing.

So, instead of going after the people who sold pirated copies of software, China goes after the maker of the legit sofware ... BRILLIANT!

I've never been an MS Fanboy, I've been a Linux user for 10 years now, and even I see no fault with MS for doing what they are doing in this case.

Well if MS keeps it up and they all switch over to Mac then there will be about 1.1 billion people using it, granted 1 billion of them will be illegal China copies. ;)

they better start making some counterfeit imacs and macbooks then.

When you have a country that has a complete lack of regard for IP. This is the result. Until they build a strong IP law system they will always be a low gradefactory for the world.

Too bad they can't change the clock to avoid the issue. They seem to have great skill/luck in making "things" appear to be younger than they really are.

I fail to see the problem here.

Zhengwei is one of many that say the crackdown unfairly harms users unable to know if the software they bought was genuine.
If you were unable to know if the software was genuine, you know now. Solution: Switch operating systems or pay for the legal version.

Others claim Microsoft's high prices are responsible for the problem.
Can't afford it? Use Linux.

Anyone wonder if the lawyer also got blanked out?

I worked for an employer once that took a trial copy of S/W licensed to me and kept on using it after I requested that they stop.

They did not, when I left, I deleted the program.
They were pissed and withheld last paycheck for 8 months.

Who sells computers with illegal copies of windows.. lets see..

dell: no
gateway: no
HP: no
compaq: no
Acer: no
Lenovo: no
IBM: no
Toshiba: no
Sony: no

So where are they buying these computers from, unknowing that the software on them is illegal? From Chun Pow, the neighbor kid up the street that is a leet computer builder? Maybe they should try to get their computers from trusted sources?

Believe or not, a lot of earth is not like 'merica. You can't just go down to the best buy. That, and when you get paid SFA, paying for software isn't priority #1.

I'm hoping West and East might meet somewhere in the middle in terms of IP ... our (US) patent system is mind boggling and stifles innovation, while their approach accomplishes the same by offering no rewards to those who do make new products.

Just another reason to select what updates you want.. ;)

This. I have all genuine versions but I'll be damned if I am going to let MS check or not.

Not only do you have to download and install the update, you have to AGREE on a page to have this installed.

Uhh, WGA is automatic at the moment and has been for well over a year. If you are getting critical updates you are also getting WGA and WU is checking your system.
