Michael Jordan is a guy who put a ball inside a hole for 2 decades. That's it. That's all he fucking did, and that's all he ever was, is, or will be. He's not a doctor. He's not an industralist like Henry Ford. He's not a statesman like Gandhi. He's no Mother Theresa either. And yet, based on how people think here in America, as well as how folks encourage little kids to put him on a pedestal, you'd think that he was in the company of those people. But get it through your thick skull. He could be as retarded as a high school kid from Texas. He put a ball in a hole for most of his life for crying out loud. Who gives a shit about "Hall of Fame". So just chill out and don't worry about it.

And Ford was a Nazi sympathizer, buried with the Iron Cross that Hitler personally bestowed upon him (his most treasured possession)

But I completely agree with your assessment of professional, or simply talented athletes. Way too much social pressure put on a person that generally spent more time honing physical abilities than reading books and thrust into a world of money and fame when only recently coming from a world of anonymity and more often than not, poverty.

yet, we assume they are as perfect as we (inaccurately) perceive ourselves.

For you and the others who have given paddinton shit about his opinion...

I happen to agree with him for the most part.

In this country, we put athletes on pedestals, pay them ungawdly sums of money to play a game, then, when they say or do something stupid, we look at them like they're three-headed monsters...except we still defend them because...OMFG! He's a sports superstar!

They're athletes...entertainers, nothing more.

so you didn't read his comment?

He's talking about the retarded image we place on athletes that has nothing to do with why we actually like them, rather than simply respect the handful of abilites that they are exceptionally good about.

The point is about spending more time assessing yourself before bringing down someone who has achieved far more in their lives than you ever will. based on your earlier comment regarding Jordan, one would assume you agree with Paddington.

But no, you're too think to understand what he's talking about.

just because you haven't had 100s (let alone 2+) women throwing themselves at you on a daily basis doesn't give you any basis for comparing how you would react under such attention.

this,

everyone that has trashed Paddington had already shown earlier that they agree with him (by criticizing those who've attacked Jordan in this thread).

I laugh, b/c they seem unwilling to grasp his point.

You're correct, they're athletes/entertainers, nothing more.

But what is entertainment in the eyes of most people, in this world, based on where they put their time and money?

Nearly everything (beyond efforts towards sustanance, like eating and sleeping.)

Money is poured into every avenue imaginable to entertain ourselves. Whether its television, the movies (including porn), sporting events, symphony's, operas, amusement parks, toys, gadgets, cars, vacations...EVERYTHING.

Professional sports in this country (and world) is one of our most revered sources of entertainment. And to suggest one of the GREATEST entertainers of all time is 'just an entertainer', is a complete societal hypocrisy that holds less water than a spaghetti strainer.

If you think entertainment is overrated, stop spending money on entertainment and on things that entertain yourself. If you don't like the way entertainers are elevated, stop paying their salaries.

I'm not naive to think that a great entertainer automatically translates into great character, but I'm also not naive to suggest a great entertainer isn't anything either. We are not a society that primarily seeks to act out of mother theresa's principles, nor one that primarily spends our money to expand mother theresa's principles, but we are a society that seeks to be entertained first and foremost.

So of course a great great 'entertainer' like Jordan is elevated in terms of garnering attention and appreciation.

I caught the tail end of the speech. Sure there were parts I didn't like so much like when he talked about organizations vs players and his ego did seem huge when talking to his kids and how popular he was but I reallyyyyy think this Wojnarowski guy completely missed the main point of the speech. It was pretty cool to hear all these stories about the people that motivated him and learn to take a joke dude, Jordan isn't coming back to basketball. Guy needs some batteries in his sarcasm meter. He's written a few other really retarded columns as well.

what a tool that wojnarowski guy is

i didn't watch the speech, was he really still bitter about the all-star lockout thing?

When one competitively plays sports, it is not uncommon to hear friendly trash talk. I have no way of knowing if he is bitter but my impression from his speech is that he was talking about it jokingly.

I think Michael Jordan is awesome... Stop fucking with his reputation. :|

I'd bang chicks too if I had all the sexy ladies coming after me, even if I was married... Unless I was married to the fucking hottest woman in the world... Which damn, is impossible once they are past 16(I kid). :p

Best thing about him is he's stayed classy over the years. No rape changes, molesting children, or hiv infections that's a rare thing these days.

Apart from the whole cheating on your wife thing...

and gambling problem...

What exactly was the problem? He never caused his family financial problems and it never affected his job/career. People want to talk about how he lost 100,000 on a golf bet, or he plays BJ until 2 AM. But honestly, he played at levels that were in line with his income. He was making 100 million dollars a year. So, what's the big deal?

People must tear others down to make themselves feel as if even the best of us are not as good as we think they are. In other words, people suck.

Wow really? The gambling is pretty bad...but cheating on your wife? You condone that? Just because he is immortal in the sport of basketball doesn't make him exempt from his personal problems. No excuses. He has a family and he ruined that. The temptation argument is bullshit. If he was really miserable before he should have separated.

I'm sorry, what exactly do you know about his personal life and his arrangement with his wife?

He ruined his family? LOL. You seem to know an a lot about hows his family feels, lives and thinks.

Not to mention that it doesn't mean he's a bad guy. He made a bad CHOICE/DECISION. Not all men can withstand temptation and are perfect like you. He made a mistake and life goes on. But, he also donated a ton of time and money. Go read his article about the Make a Wish foundation. He gave over 175 wishes (most of anyone) and donated a lot of time/money to them. He's a good guy overall, but no one said he was perfect. He's the greatest basketball player of all time as well.

Jesus Christ this is like watching those commercials for the shower gels that double as body wash. Men are just sooooooo simple and basic they can't be bothered to use soap AND shampoo in separate bottles huh? This isn't just some small choice...this was a huge one that had a deep resonance with many people close to him. Yes everyone makes bad choices, but the severity is important. What would you say if he "accidentally" just shot his wife. There would be an uproar. But because cheating is all so common these days we don't care. It is pathetic and degrading for you to accept that a man can't keep his penis in his pants. Get a fucking clue.

Are you really going to bombard me with MJ's long list of contributions? How hard is it to go volunteer your time now and then. Just because other athletes are "too busy" doesn't mean the norm should be 1 or 2 acts of volunteering. AND I couldn't give a shit about how much money he's donated. He'll be loaded for the rest of his life. It's hardly like these donations cut him deep in the pocket.

I've already agreed he's one of the greatest basketball players of all time but that doesn't give him a break to do whatever the hell he wants in his personal life.

I didn't know this was a Wilt Chamberlain thread.

He was so much bigger and stronger than anyone else at the time, it's not really fair to say that. Most dominant player in an era? Probably.Wilt may have scored 100 in a game, but Shaq in his prime could have scored 100 PER game during the 60's.

Wilt was an awesome shooter in the paint and didn't just get points because of his size and strength, he got many because he was very skilled and a great athlete. He had an fantastic touch but was also very quick. He was a natural scorer.

Shaq on the other hand was and is nothing without his size advantage. Emphasis on Nothing. He's been in the league about 15 years and still can barely shoot the ball outside 4 feet (and 'barely' is probably stretching his abilities as well.)

That's not to say Shaq hasn't been great. Its about getting it done and he's used what he's got to dominate his position for many years. But his advantage is as much as Wilt's was imo and he hasn't accomplished squat compared to wilt (except some rings while teaming up with another marquee HOF-quality player.)

shaq's footwork and post awareness are tremendous. to discount it as just size show's ignorance of how basketball is played.

Footwork 'for his size', sure. Post awareness tho, lol...wtf does that mean when the offense is designed to run around you. Because he's learned to pass to an open player when double teamed is hardly freaking genius...he sees over everyone and he eventually learned to be patient when there is a couple guys strapped to him, to look around the court and find who's open. wow.

I'd put my money on Wilt as long as they don't allow the offensive fouls that shaq's infamous for getting away with from the refs, especially earlier in his career. Wilt's endurance would also outlast shaq.
