Have this person go into Ventrilo Setup and select a Mixer for the sound card that will be the sound input device (as determined by the "Input device" option). This will populate the Mux and Line options. Normally there should only be one Mux. It's possible that you might have numerous Line options. Go ahead and select "Microphone" or what ever is appropriate for the input line and then click OK.

It's a common problem in Ventrilo. It's also easy to fix.
From the Ventrilo FAQ page:

My EQ2 guild uses Vent and we often have people joining us with the problem. This has always fixed the problem.

That might be helpful for the other guy, since he's using vent. However my problem is not a vent-related one. Whenever I'm using my microphone, I am unable to hear the sound that I am currently making. When recording my voice with Windows Sound Recorder I am unable to hear anything, but I can play back whatever I said. I believe it's an input/output issue but I have no idea how to fix this. I read someplace about bypassing something on Vista, does anybody have an idea? I want to be able to hear myself so I know what my microphone is picking up when I'm recording sound (i.e. the fan or background noise). Thanks in advance!
