I still think the best is the Black Album.... :p
My Friend of Misery, Wherever I May Roam, Enter Sandman, Of Wolf and Man, Sad But True, Nothing Else Matters.....Every song on that album rocked.

I think the Black album is where they started to go downhll. They toned things down a bit and weren't as raw or heavy which wasn't a good direction to go. I still like it but they were definitely on the downslide and had started making bunches of music videos at this point.

My favorites are Kill 'em All and Ride the Lightning.

I don't blame them for supporting the RIAA because they were brainwashed into thinking that they were losing money. (which they were) I don't exactly think of Metallica as a bunch of computer geeks, so they wouldn't know what an MP3 was if it weren't for the RIAA bringing it to their attention. ;)
I watched a special on TLC a week or so. They had to declare bankruptcy when they had one of their best albums out, CrazySexyCool. They were getting 8 cents for every album sold, and then still having to pay their managers, production cost for videos, and taxes....They were getting about 50k a piece per year and it was a multiplatinum album. I regret feeding into the greedy record labels and RIAA by purchasing this and giving them only 8 cents on a 15 dollar cd.... No offense to Metallica, but they smoked up their last brain cells when they sided with someone who is giving them less than a penny on the dollar for all their artistic work...

Dude Metallica calls the shots when they market their albums

Metallica was the band that got me interested in metal. I cant wait for the tour in the summer. I just hope they will announce more UK dates, as I cant make the 2 they've announced so far.

I remember being in a bar shooting some stick....when they played a song from the newly released Ride The Lightning album.

It was the first time I heard of Metallica. Creeping Death was the song and I became a hardcore Metallica fan for many years. I still continued to like them a lot...but I stopped seeing them live.

Actually the last time I saw them live...was their first tour as the headliner (ONE). Just a coincidence though.

I'll never forget the night when they followed OZZY during one tour (Puppet had just come out) and the crowd went ballistic. Metallica stole the show.

I only started buying their albums AFTER the Napster crap.

Of course I sided with Metallica...

Metallica = sold out
Helps if you know a little of their history.

The ONLY reason they ever made it big was because they gave out free demo tapes of No Life Til Leather at their concerts and allowed fans to tape their concerts. Then from 1983, when Kill 'Em All was released, until 1990 (when Metallica began to ride up the And Justice for All rocket), Metallica was under FCC ban from US airwaves (along with a number of other metal groups during the '80s) and could not get radio play except from a bootleg heavy metal radio station out of Texas called Z-Rock, which taped daily 6 hour shows and then distributed then to tiny AM radio stations nationwide for airplay. It was Z-Rock that originally coined the phrase, "Mandatory Metallica."
By taking a stance against Napster, Metallica bit the had that fed them, that made them what they were.

edit: Ride the Lightning has always been my favorite album by them. It was at that time (1984) when I first started listening to them.

1. 'Tallica's first vid, and nomination at the VMAs (I think, it was when they lost to Jethro Tull), was during the Justice days.

2. 'Tallica bit the hand that fed them how? Many struggling groups/artists (band, filmmaker, writer, etc.,) give out free or cheap copies of their stuff so they can start creating a buzz and get their music out there. Does that mean they should always give out their stuff for free? You can still sell/trade boot leg copies of 'tallica shows all you want. Heck it's even supported and encouraged by the band (both the metallica.com forum and the official fan club magazine have "bootleg" sections).

3. Personally I think the Black Album is their weakest album. They tried too hard and spent so much time on it it ended being over-produced. If you ever get a chance to watch "A year and a half in the life of..." you'll see them reocording some of the songs and they sound so much better, IMO, than the final mixes that ended up on the album.

Well I'm on my 3rd listen of this album for the day and I'm still not bored with it. I think this weekend I'll pickup KEA and MOP.

Any suggestions on other good metal bands?

Ride the Lightning is an insanely good album (and a great song, as well). Their best, IMO. Call me crazy, but I love Load, too. I'm not terribly partial to either "era" of Metallica. I like it all.

Ride the Lightning is their best IMO.

And I agree with the crowd that says they've sold out.

If you're listening to Metallica right now, then Megadeth should be next of course. :)
Rust in Peace is probably their best album, but Peace Sells... but Who's Buying? (sig) and Countdown to Extinction are great too.

Just a few off the top of my head:
Iron Madien
MegaDeth
Pantera
Blind Guardian
Dark Moor
Hammerfall
Ice Earth (I really don't like them but what do I know)
Nevermore
InFlames
Stratavarious<sp?>
Spite (small band, have one album on Metal Blade records, Bastard Complex, only place I found it was half.com, but it's killer piece of work)
Black Sabbath
Judas Priest (gettin' old school I know)
War Machine (not the 80's band. These guys are young and from Canada. do a google for "war machine" and you should be able to find their site and d/l their songs).
Kittie (I hear you laughing, but I'm serious)

If you really like RtL and MoP (especially the more melodic aspects of the songs) you might want to check out power metal (like Nevermore or Blind Guardian) or even some prog rock (Dream Theater).

My Favorite Metallica album. Awsome licks in that album (plus D. Mustaine helped out on few songs). My 8 year old cousin always liked it when I played it i n the car. He bought the CD himself. LOL now he started playing the trumpet. I think its great for young and old. My first song to play was "For whom the bells toll" I loved the beat and everything. You can also really hear how C. Burton was instrumental in the band that early and his Bass guitar playing was phenomenal. :D

Dream Theater is some of the cheesiest corny laughable crap I have ever heard. When i first heard it I was thinking that it was a joke or some sort of spoof. Turns out they're serious which makes it funnier and sad at the same time.

Are you for real? The talent of those guys is unbelivable! Petrucci, Portnoy, etc. Dream Theater and Liquid Tension have some of the best progressive rock albums ever.

I never really got into ManOward, and Kittie may be a guilty pleasure, but I've gotta give'em a nod for a pretty ballsy cover of Floyd's "run like hell." Plus I have a soft spot for chix in metal, industrial, goth, or punk bands. :)

RE Dream Theater: "Awake" and "Images and Words" are 2 incredible albums. They're 3rd album (something "infinity" has some good moments but overall isn't that good. Their last 2 albums have been, IMO, overly self-indulgent<sp?> are something akin to a technical demonstration not good music. But, like I said before, "Images and Words" and "Awake" are awesome albums IMO.

DT's Falling Into Infinity isn't that great, IMHO. Awake is better, and my favorite has to be Images and Words (I like all of the songs except Under a Glass Moon). There are a few songs that I like on Scenes From a Memory (Strange Deja Vu, Fatal Tragedy, and Dance of Eternity) and Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence (Glass Prison, Overture), but most of the other songs on those two albums don't really appeal to me.

Yep, a technical demonstration is about it. They have some talent on their instruments but their music completely sucks. The last song I heard from them was on a compilation CD people at work put together, it was called "Metropolis" and while technically I can say they can play, in reality it is horrible utter crap. It's just incredibly corny and ridiculous. I was playing it the car and as the song went on my girlfriend even kept saying "You have got to be kidding me!" followed by her busting out laughing.

Metal should be raw and heavy like Metallica, Slayer, Black Sabbath, Pantera, etc. Not this cornball stuff that Dream Theater puts out. If you like it that's cool, I find it just as ridiculous as the old big hair metal like Cindarella

Yea, Ride The Lightning was IMO Metallica's best album. Good fast and angry trash metal, not like the boring overhyped soft-rock that came after Burton died. If you like trash, I'd suggest the following bands to check out:

Annihilator -> killer riffing, Jeff Waters is a guitar genious !
Slayer -> kinda sold out for today, last 2 albums suck (they sound like some nu-metal), older stuff is mostly very good
Iced Earth
Megadeth
Sodom -> my favorite, uncle Tom rules!
Overkill
Destruction
etc :)

PS: there's band named Stratovarius not Stratavarius :)
