Artists want their music heard not just the hits. That's the main driving force on this. They really don't make their cash from record sales and if no one knows other songs then noone wants to pay $15-50+ to hear one song.
The whole music industry is screwed up by the executives and not so much the artists. Many times the first 'hit' an artist has let's him move up in life a little, but the real money is made by the record company.
Now you have companies like Clear Channel controlling what we hear on the radio and that affects artists too...they can no longer create their own recording companies as easily because 1) Clear Channel won't play it 2) they can't get distibution to the big shops like Best Buy and the like and 3) with many auditoriums being bought out by #1 and #2 they have no where to play.
There is a lot going on in the music industry and the sad part is the artist has become their prize horse and nothing else.
