Rock bands The Red Hot Chili Peppers and Metallica are refusing to make their music available as individual downloads on Apple Computer Inc's iTunes online music store, a representative for the bands, said Wednesday.

It seems they don't like that a person can just buy one song off the album but instead want them to buy the whole album or the single they put out on cd......idiots.
"We can't let a distributor dictate the way our artists sell their music," Reiter said, adding that the business terms were otherwise acceptable.

Apple (AAPL: Research, Estimates) had no immediate comment.

Calling the issue more a "creative issue than a financial issue," Reiter said the artists felt that if consumers can download their singles, they are less apt to buy entire albums.

"If you download a single, you may ignore the other tracks on the album," he said. "When our artists record a body of work, it's what they deem to be representative of their careers at that time."

The article goes on to say Green Day and Linkin Park also refuse this iTunes service.

I know that if I put much time and effort into an album, I wouldn't want it sold as singles, unless I CHOOSE too. That's what single releases are for. If iTunes were to sell only the singles I release as singles, I'd be okay with it.

hmmm... the "a album is a peice of art and should not be stripped" is almost a valuable option... if it wasn't metallica.
(there are some incredible albums out there, that can only be apreciated as a whole)

more and more i think that metallica has an uterly despise of everything that is modern technology... time for them to vanish in the infinite ends of dust...

So you like buying whole albums only to find there are two songs worth a crap on it?? This is just creating the artists more competition to make better songs. They just don't like it that no one will have to also be purchasing their lousey tracks on ITUNE.

Personally I think those are valid arguments. Apple is very stupid to not list these artists who don't want individual tracks available.

I'm arguing for principle, obviously. I think I've bought 5-7 albums in my entire life, and that was just 2 bands... because I support them.

Out of all the cd's I have bought throughout my life, I can honestly say I have ignored 70% of the songs on those cd's. I would rather be able to pick the songs I want instead of being told what I am gonna get.

Please don't believe that you have a choice in everything else you buy in corporate America.

Look at it this way - package deals with unknown or common parts are the primary reason we build our own computers so that we get exactly what we want.

In the end, it's all a business. (Otherwise, they'd let you download the music for free, wouldn't they?). Maximize profits.

If you can choose to buy only the things you want everywhere and in every case, then this would be a PERFECT world. I'm not saying I don't want it that way - it'll just never happen.

Once online music buying goes really mainstream, bands who don't offer individual songs will not be nearly as successful as bands who do.
If the consumer demands it, "corporate America" will bow to their wishes, after all they are after the dollar. Would they rather have a person who buys 5-6 songs or someone who doesn't buy anything because they are forced to buy 13 songs?

Bleh, screw Metallica. Looks like their music will just be pirated instead of legally purchased by everyone. RHCP - I have By The Way and Californication - almost all the songs on their CDs are awesome - it'd be more expensive to download them all than just buying the whole CD.

I find it funny that record labels still charge $5.99 for single song CDs.

I sorta agree with this.

Of the roughly 10,000 songs I have on my computer, only 20 or so are singles and not accompanied by the full album.

Bwahaha....ok so now we're being forced to listen to entire albums? It's MY CHOICE to ignore other tracks on the album!!! Next thing you know, the RIAA will want to ban the "fast forward" button on my CD player.

You still have a choice. Dont buy the album. Listen to it at a friends house or *gasp* download the mp3s and decide if you're going to buy it or not. I don't see what the big deal is... if these bands want to shoot themselves in the foot, let em.

Maybe they should instead be concentrating on making an album full of songs I would buy, as opposed to bitching that people are only buying their singles.

So what? We're just heading further down the road of "release 1 good song every 3 months instead of a good album every 2 years". Personally, I like whole albums. If you only like 2 of the songs, why buy the album? Let their sales drop and maybe they'll start putting more good tracks on it.

Ever notice how people usually only like the songs played on TV? Are the TV stations that good at picking winners, or are we letting them do the choosing for us?

Edit: Stupid spelling. :p

I'm not against downloading music, I have a *cough* small *cough* collection myself, but if slapping together an album is so easy, why do these bands not make great albums all the time? People talk about music as if it is the same as a car. It's not as simple as telling GM to spend a little more on better interior materials. Making good songs is a creative process, and you can't simply will yourself to do it. Either you have the talent or you don't, but it's not as simple as some people make it out to be.

I can understand Pink Floyd or Tool making these arguments, but not RHCP, Linkin Park or Metallica.

the artist usually chooses the strongest(most mainstream) track on the album to release as there album comes out, and we listen to them and end up likeing them because they are forced down are throat by radio and mtv.
the more you listen to a song the more you will start likeing it
