Metallica POLL. Better pre-Black Album or after??

i like the stuff afterwards, it's a bit more mellow, i'm not into the whole metal scene, they calmed it down to rock on that one.....so i liked it better

I also saw them live before Cliff Burton died. Had no idea at the time they'd be so big...at the time they were just "underground" metal.
I bought Master Of Puppets when released in 1986 and had been listening to Ride The Lightening for well over a year. A friend and I were introduced to Metallica by an older (4 years) acquaintance who had been listening to Metallica on vinyl since Kill 'em All. Vinyl! :Q

I was among those who thought Metallica 'sold out' with the Black Album (if not before), but that was really stupid now that I think about it. Like the record companies are going to say: "Hey, we have an idea. You are the most successful [and profitable] hard rock/heavy metal band in the last 15 years. Your albums sell millions of copies and your concerts are always sold-out. We think you should change." NO!

If Metallica 'sold out' to anything, it was age, maturity, and their own changing/evolving personal styles. This was a band who had already been together for nearly 10 years by the time they were being accused of 'selling out'! Whose tastes in music don't change over 10 years? Most everyone will.

You can't stay 18 forever, although when you're 18, you think you will. 😛

Part of their demise was actually a joke by a metal program on the Dutch radio.

The program would be replaced by a pop program, while being the only metal program on the radio at that time, and a lot of people were annoyed. It was near the end of the year, and there would soon be a vote for the Top 100 of all time again, so as a nice ending to the series the DJ asked the listeners to all vote for Metallica's One for the Top 100. That year it entered the list out of nowhere on the 40th place.
One year later it was 2.
Next year it actually pushed Bohemian Rhapsody off the first place.

As their Black Album had just been released the sales for that soared, and they got more and more playtime worldwide (get popular in one country, and you'll get playtime in others based on that popularity).

They tasted success, and sold out 🙁

I love all of it. The pre-Black albums were faster and harded, but the later stuff seemed to convey more emotion and feeling.

Anyway Metallica > *.bands

Yup 🙂

Kill em All was Great
Ride the Lightning was Great
Master of Puppets was Great
And Justice For all was Good
Black album was decent
Load was a Load of Crap
Anything after that I have never Intentionally forced myself to listen to

I got interested in them because of TBA (The Black Album - you MetallicA fans know that acronym by now, don't you?). But for the past 12 years, I've been listening to 90% TBA and before. I like maybe 3 songs from anything after, but I have all their albums and play nothing but MetallicA in my car since about '95. MoP is my favorite song of all time from them. Great energy song, but then so is Holier Than Thou.

I also hope their new album will be a return to their roots, even though that new release with Ja Rule (oh God help us) was a mess...

By far, PRE.
They did sell out after/during(?) the Black album and the Napster thing still irritates me.
Some other fun stuff to listen to, listen to Apocalyptica

4 Cellos jamming Metallica and other stuff...

pre-black, definitely. Black is great, Load and Reload are "okay"; both have some good songs (Outlaw Torn, Fuel, Unforgiven II) but nothing compares to RtL or MoP.
