yeah i forced myself to play it because i was so invested.. Not a 10/10 game. more like a 6/10 because it felt so forced. Pointless "grinding" pointless wasting hours when it really doesn't have a purpose.

I never found any grinding, but tying the MP to the main game with the bases was a bad move.

I'm late to the party and didn't read the whole thread (which is already dead) but I just finished chapter 1 and this is more of less my feeling as well. A lot of tedious repetition, not exactly fun but it finally hooked me in a bit after being very underwhelmed after playing the first 5-10% of the game. Still, I'm not a fan of the open world system because it's nothing like the metal gear series. Everything feels the same and the epic nature of the other games is completely missing. Snake Eater was such a great game and I miss that style. I don't want complete control of the world, I want an interesting and fun world, where the story progressed on its own and the environments felt more unique, with powerful boss fights. If this wasn't a metal gear game I could understand the rave reviews, but I'm surprised that people seem to love this game so much.

I'd say, the best moment in the MGS series is MGS4 (yes this will wipe clean all the hour + cut scenes) when you return to Shadow Moses again... It kind of caught me by surprise... The trailer mentioned something about Shadow Moses as a replay, but not that you're actually going back as old snake.. Then the MGS 1 "best is yet to come" music starts playing with some MGS 1 dialog echoing back at some of the areas in the game to have you remember what happened there in MGS 1... that gave me chills...

I just bought this due to the price drop, probably won't have a chance to play it for another couple months though. I got it for my Xbox One, it's going to feel strange playing a Metal Gear game on an Xbox.

the long ladder in snake eater was a better moment than anything in phantom pain so far

I didn't like snake eater all that much because I like Solid Snake as a character much more.

I don't seem to have had any of the complaints others have about phantom pain though.

yeah i just don't like grinding... that was really really annoying..
Yea I stopped playing way early on becuase I kind of got bored. But I kept the game in case I wanted to pick up again. My issue was I kept doing the side missions becuase they kept coming up after each time. Then when I got to like the 4th or 5th story mission I was bored.

and all the missions and the settings are all so similar. in chapter 2 we get the "extreme" and whatever else the descriptions are and it's the same stuff with limitations added or difficulty jacked up. not sure why I'm still playing. boredom

yeah just skip those "exterme" stuff. Because they don't progress the story.

Played a little at launch and tried starting back up today. What happened to the load times? I don't remember any problems when I first played, but today had a lot of issues. Got to the point where it was stuck on a loading screen for 5 minutes before I turned the PS4 off.

Having played it on PC I have no idea what could cause long load times. I don't remember but does the game try to keep an online connection for some reason? If psn is slow or down that could be it.

So aside from a few outliers the general consensus is it isn't very good? I've been holding off getting it. I am not a fan of tons of repetition in 'missions' (like Far Cry 3/4). We are past that in this age.

I got bored becuase I was doing the same things over and over again. I may just trade it in when the division comes out. I don't think I even did many of the story missions. It is a good game just a bit on the repetitive side.

I found it very repetitive but I thought the consensus (or at least the reviews) was nearly all positive. I haven't read through much of this thread though

Haven't touched this game in a long while. Just waiting for april now...

They liked the fact it didn't "play" like previous MGS games... this is literally the same mission masked 50x over. There are probably really only 10-15 real missions. The rest are just repetitive... And the side missions? Just there for you repeat some more to "gain XP" points. seriously pointless.

I think what MGS5 offers the player is immersion as a tactical action game. They could have applied a Delta Force or Ranger backdrop and kept most of the gameplay intact and it would have felt good. It doesn't really matter how accurate the game is...it's about that feeling you get when the helicopter drops you off and your life depends on staying hidden. Previous MGS games were more about the absurdity of the story line and bouncing from cut scene to cut scene.

I think if you removed the story, dropped in a quasi real world scenario, and cranked up the sensitivity of the troops...there could seriously be some magic there. Then again, I'm a masochist that plays Operation Flashpoint games.

It's somewhat like Assassin's Creed Black Flag which is a fun pirate naval game wrapped in a cheesy plot. MGS5 is a fun, immersive special forces game wrapped in a cheesy MGS plot. I think this explains why people put so many hours into it. Everyone wants to be Chuck Norris.

I can understand that people like the game, but this is MGS we're talking about. One of the best game franchises with a strong fan base and huge acclaim. And we're happy that they changed the gameplay completely? They should have made it a different game

Nah I liked it because it wasn't linear. I didn't complete a mission until I called for evac. I could go anywhere in the area of operations and acquire materials and troops for mother base if I just felt like it. In previous MGS games you had a much more limited area to work in. I enjoyed not being limited to just the one specific target area.

I'm nearing the end of playing, and I certainly enjoyed it. The gameplay to me felt like classic MGS. The Side Ops are repetitive yes.

Kind of funny that they patched in an ability to get Quiet back. Using her as an buddy made things almost too easy though; maybe that's why people like using her so much?
