Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain is released on PC today, digitally and in physical disc format. Or, as it turns out, just the former. A Twitter user who got their physical copy of Hideo Kojima's latest action-stealth epic has posted a number of screenshots that suggest the only file on the disc is a Steam installer. We live in a very stupid era. That's just under 9MB of data, if you're wondering. It's the sort of thing that makes a bit of a mockery of the fact that a lot of industry chart websites still don't include digital sales in their final tally. That means that people will have some serious downloading to do – around 28GB - before they want to play MGS5, even if they grab a boxed copy. Thankfully, it sounds like the game is worth the wait. - See more at: http://www.gamewatcher.com/news/201...staller-and-nothing-else#sthash.J37Vbqxw.dpuf

Its not hard to get an early retail copy, some console players have been playing it for a week or so and the only justification for this is to stop the pirated PC version from being released before launch. Its Konami though so they don't get the benefit of the doubt, its really ridiculous.

I literally lol'd. Should also have troll face on the opposing side from the disc.

Though I don't really see the problem. As far as I'm concerned anymore, physical distribution can die a slow death and I won't care. I got over having racks of DVDs and game cases a decade ago.

At least back in the days they used to fill up the space with demo videos of upcoming games...

I'd be pretty annoyed if I bought the physical game as I sometimes go that route if the price is the same, because it allows me to save on my limited bandwidth (thanks Comcast). 28GB is nearly 10% of my allotment (until I pay for more). That said, I got the game for free from Nvidia and my meter just reset today, so I've already downloaded it. :p

I'm guessing it's to save costs, since it looks like the game would need 3 dual layer DVDs to fit all the data. The least they could've done was to cram the one DVD with as much data as possible and have you download the rest ^_^

I've said this before, but places like Gamestop and Best Buy should setup kiosks where customers can stick in their own 32gb+ usb stick and copy over installer data for PC games. If nothing else, it'll increase foot traffic in stores. Hell, it can't be that expensive to connect 3-4 android based tablets/touchscreens with a USB port that connect to a centralized NAS that serves as a repository for a bunch of video game installers. Make 'em watch a bunch of ads while their game data is being copied over for extra revenue.

This is pure BS, the XBOX 360 version my bro bought today under the "Day One Edition" and contains a single install disc and a play disc, he had to download a 75MB update too.

Game looks and plays well on the 360.

As always Pc users get the shorthand, the sale should be at least half the cost VS console physical media.

So, you are SOL if you do not have broadband access. Defeats the purpose of releasing a 'hardcopy' of the game, doesn't it?

Imagine having crap internet, buying the disc to avoid downloading the game, and having this pop up. What's the bloody purpose of even bothering to get those DVDs stamped and shipped?!

Oh Konami, you never cease to boggle my mind. :D

I was told it's a digital only release by my local Gamestop as they didn't even list the physical game int their system. I had no idea it was an option to get the box, but I guess technically it really is digital only.

Going to be honest this is not a game. It's walk 2 feet watch 2 hour cut scene, walk 2 more feet watch 2 hour cut scene ad nauseum. I don't know what this is supposed to be.

If you say so. You probably aren't far enough into the game to make that claim. It's funny how no review says that about the game.

After 3 hours finally the game started. I suppose you have to devote your life to playing "games" to enjoy this. This is more like a movie. 3 hours in and I had all of 2 minutes of control over my character.

Anyway the playable part is fun and the game runs well. But really the amount of cinematics means you have to be a child or unemployed or full time game reviewer to get any actual play time in. It's gone over the top with the antithesis of "just dive in and play."

Everything I've read says that yea the beginning takes awhile to get through, but after that there isn't a lot of cinematics.

I made this comment in another thread, but I'll rehash. The MGS series is about as "story based" as it gets. If you like that sort of game, it is the greatest thing in the universe...but if you prefer more action then you'll likely be disappointed over the long haul. To be fair toward MGS5, this game is the most action oriented version to be released and should appeal to a wider audience. Earlier games like MGS4 are far more linear and require lots of patience with cutscenes.

This aspect is generally the thing that divides the fan versus the non-fan. MGS is all about fan service, but I consider that a good thing.
