Pay attention. Eat over your plate, and analyze the physics of what you're doing. Spot failure points before they happen.

OP, this sounds like poor upbringing. Are your parents bad people? Do any of your sibling knife puppies?

The police dropped him on his parents doorstep. They tried to give him back...

There's this thing called 'situational awareness.' Some folks are born without it and never seem to learn it.

Are we talking about eating, or engineering a fighter jet?

Doesn't matter. The same technique should be used for the most trivial tasks you perform to most complex. Before anything is done, the first thought should be "How can I fuck this up?", and measures taken to prevent it. If an unforeseen fuckup happens, file it away, and don't let it happen again.

Yes, this.
Though there's also prevention - if a food tends to be messy, don't eat it in the first place. :p

I find I pick foods based on ease of eating, and flavor then comes in at some point in time.
For example, only eat messy foods on weekends, when there is appropriate time to clean up adequately, or when being messy matters less.
Inherently crumbly foods are usually off the menu, as crumbs tend to bounce or get blown around with the slightest errant breath, and it can quickly becomes more trouble than it's worth.
Foods that have water-soluble residues are preferred over fatty greases.
If it can be eaten at refrigerator or room temperature, without the need for heating, that's another plus.

But as far as containment goes, you've got lips. Use them.
Close your lips around the food item, then make the cut or break inside your mouth, and don't shuffle your hands all over the thing. Crumb generation is primarily in your mouth, and is therefore contained. (And don't chew with your mouth open. For one, it sounds gross, and also can let crumbs and such spew everywhere.)

But hell, I even select things based on the aftertaste. For example, most things with any significant quantity of garlic are out, as that nasty aftertaste persists for hours, and no amount of tooth brushing can affect it.

(Hey, it's still physics. With some chemistry, I guess, which is just applied physics.)

Yes, I'm terribly lazy when it comes to food. If I could have an adapter installed so I could just charge off a 120VAC source, rather than needing to eat, I'd go for it. I also hope no one offers such a thing, because I don't want to find out how much money I'd be willing to pay for it. It would probably be an irrationally substantial amount though.

First add-on accessory: A sine-wave inverter and some solar panels. Second add-on accessory: A USB charging port.

But, I digress...

Take the blue pill and strap your helmet on. He merely needs to work on awareness not give up great food. I run across your sort often though, I usually direct them to BK down the street.

What kind of food do you eat where this happens? Some foods are just messy no matter how you eat it, especially donuts that have those little candy beads on them, or powdered donuts. Some badly made subs or pitas can be extremely messy as well.

Hmm Google has "Google glass". Maybe Twitter will come up with "Twitter Mask". It's a mask that goes over your mouth and tweets things you eat and say! Would need an opening for food of course, and it would have cameras to record the footage of the chewing.
