Merging when entering Freeway (Highway)...

When I was driving, when approaching areas where people would be Merging, I'd get out of the lane they'd be Merging into. If I couldn't, I'd let a 1 Merger get in front of me, as long as they were traveling at a reasonable speed. Doing things like that helps you avoid incidents and helps those trying to get on the Highway/Freeway. Everybody wins.

The person already on the highway has the right of way.

Mergers must yield.

It all depends on where you are from and the local laws that you live under. In my drivers education class from many years ago, they taught us to give others room to merge.

I would rather the people on the highway do not try to anticipate the merging. It is much harder for me to merge when I don't know if they are slowing down, speeding up, maintaining their speed, or swerving around while balancing the coffee on the top of their cell phone while leaning way over to look cool.

That being said, it would be easier to merge if everyoe wasn't so insistent on tailgating and leaving almost no room to merge in the first place.

While we are on the subject of driving...

When you are merging into a rotary (also known as a round-about), You yield to the traffic in the rotary! I don't care how big your truck is, I have the right of way!

sometimes i feel like people who change lanes or merge just hold their breath and make the move, hoping that they dont hit anybody.

I always try and give people space to merge in, but it PISSES me off when I have no where to go and the guy getting on just flanks me the whole way expecting me to do something. YVCK YOU GUY.

😛

I have gotten in this argument with several people. I had one guy say that the highway must yield. That is why there is a yield sign. He never did explain to me why they would put the sign on the ramp and not the highway.

Anyone that has driven on the 322 to 15 interchange outside of Harrisburg knows that the ramp is only 5 feet long. Worst part is it is on a curve so you can?t see. Second if you don?t merge right away you will slam into a bridge support.

I never complain about people not moving over for me. But I do have a problem with somebody sitting in my blind spot when I am trying to merge. I also hate the people that speed up or slow down, completely screwing up your timing.

I was driving on the highway, maintaining my speed. A vehicle was entering said highway and needed to slow down in order to merge and felt like honking at me for it as if I should have been the one yielding. Of course, I flipped said vehicle the "bird", but it had me thinking when I got back to the office.

I would have honked at you, too. Legally you have the right of way, but would it have killed you to ease off the gas for two seconds to open up a space for the guy? When you're merging, if some asshole forces you to jam on the brakes, it makes it a LOT harder to get onto the highway at all since now you're out of ramp AND going too slow, and everyone behind you is now f**ked, too.

Use right of way responsibly. If someone is coming up a ramp and has reached highway speed, if you can let them in just let them in.

Anyone who says "get up to speed before merging" has never driven in Pennsylvania. Ramps terminated in stop signs..... Your merge speed is equal to your speed after a 10ft runup.

There's a reason they do this in PA - Pennsies stop at yield signs no matter what, and roll through stop signs, even if someone is coming. They seem to have the meanings of the signs reversed.

So PennDOT plays along. If they want you to yield at the top of the ramp, they put a stop sign there.

i know how to merge, its the assholes behind me who ride my ass or honk because i am stopped on the on ramp because traffic is heavy and i cant merge.

Mergers must yield.

Not in Texas

http://www.txdps.state.tx.us/ftp/forms/DLhandbook.pdf

You have to yield to cars merging on the highway and leaving the highway.

go back and take your driving test, oh and how did you pass it in the first place??

Section 9-2
ENTERING THE FREEWAY
1. You must yield the right-of-way to vehicles already on the freeway.
2. Enter the speed change lane, stay to the right, signal left, and when the
way is clear increase your speed so you can merge with the flow of traffic.
