Merging when entering Freeway (Highway)...

Dumb question that should be easily answered:

When merging when entering Freeway (Highway up my my neck of the woods) who has the right of way? The cars on already on the Freeway or the car merging?

Whenever you are putting your vehicle in the path of a another vehicle in a straight line = you yield to them. Especially if they are going faster than you.

You can use this for just about any situation.

Now here's the trick...you merging and them getting off the interstate?

interstate guys still has right of way.

how'd you not know this? someone was sleeping at drivers sckool 😛

US drivers = worst on earth

When merging you do not have right of way, and PLEASE, get to freeway speed before attempting to merge.

No man, I KNEW this but after having someone honk at me today I wasn't as confident as I had been.

I was driving on the highway, maintaining my speed. A vehicle was entering said highway and needed to slow down in order to merge and felt like honking at me for it as if I should have been the one yielding. Of course, I flipped said vehicle the "bird", but it had me thinking when I got back to the office.

Highway drivers have the right of way but they should at least anticipate a merge and either move over or make room. I hate it when they decide to drive up side by side with you and match your speed. Oh, and I love it when I brake that he brakes and when I accelerate he accelerates. Fun times.

That you live in my town makes me laugh because the drivers here make me wonder about this question too. There's lots of places where the merge is tricky, especially that 3/4 loop ramp from eastbound Int'l to Northbound Minnesota. I HATE that one. I swear drivers actively try to restrict me to the shoulder any time I try merging here.

It is soley your responsibility as the merging vehicle to adjust your speed accordingly.

back to driving school.

yep for some reason no one in Los Angeles seems to have learned this in drivers ed, because they always seem to try and merge going 20 miles an hour slower then traffic therefore making everyone break and causeing traffic jams.

I swear merging is one of the biggest reasons for all the traffic in LA, in other states there are merge lanes 1/2 the size of some here and people have no problems

It's called 'defensive driving'. Heard of it? Just because you have the right away doesn't imply that you should ignore everyone that doesn't have the right of way.

Yeah, this isn't the only time this has happened to me either. I take the New Seward to work and back everyday. For whatever reason, the mergers feel like the people on the highway need to slow down and let them in, hell, more often then not the merger isn't even looking to see if there is a vehicle on the highway or not. It pisses me off to no end.

Now, I'll allow the merge to happen if I can move over to the other lane, but if not, I don't feel it's my responsibility to slow down, on the HIGHWAY (where I'm already going 65+) to let someone who's only getting up to speed merge.

Anyone who says "get up to speed before merging" has never driven in Pennsylvania. Ramps terminated in stop signs..... Your merge speed is equal to your speed after a 10ft runup.

I hated that when I had to pick up my sister over in PA. A stop sign, and then a 10ft merge. OMG I thought I was going to die.

You know what... I bet that because New Seward is practically the only stretch of road in the state with freeway-style ramps, people here just don't have a frikkin clue how they work. On that highway I have problems too.. especially the Tudor SB on-ramp guys coming on. it's like 3 or 4 of them will all try to merge between the same two cars even if theres only space for ONE car between them.

20 mph SLOWER than traffic?

You mean they're moving backwards?

I concur. Another HUGE problem here in LA/OC is the merging between the carpool lane (diamond lane) and the fast lane. OMFG that ALWAYS backs things up near busier exits. I usually don't use the fast lane anymore b/c of this...
