It looks pretty damn cool but I don't know if I want to spend $50 on it.

Fail describes it pretty well.

Bad ai, shallow gameplay, etc. I never played the original though, some of them seem to like it.

the original was awesome on xbox/ps2. The reviews I've read gripe about the same stuff they griped about with the first one..and I loved it. But like you said, $50...with Fallout 3 right around the corner? and COD5? I really want to get it and do some online coop and just blow crap up, but I'm still fighting through the ps2 version on occasion. I'm waiting a bit before I make my final decision on purchasing. I want to see some PC vids people make, read some PC support forums for it and stuff to get the real idea of how well it works. It is a shame they didn't provide a demo though.

I rented it and perfectly glad I did.

It has some pretty graphics at times, but other times it looks like someone rehashed an Original Xbox game. The gameplay is simple and dull after 10 minutes. It's fun destroying buildings and such with airstrikes, RPGs, and what not, but that feeling of fun dies down quickly because that's about the only thing you really ever do.

Co-op is decently fun, but I always have fun in co-op no matter the game. It's not a must rent game, but it wouldn't hurt if you tried it.

I'd give it a 4/10.

i could use a simple, fun, blow shit up type of game but still doesn't sound like this one is worth it.

I liked the first one the Xbox quite a lot. From what I've seen so far with this one and reviews, I wish they would have taken a little bit different direction and also it sounds like it could've used another few months at least. In short without a demo, I doubt I"ll pick it up for $50. But if there is a special on it for $30 or less I might grab it.

I beat it the other day (roommate got it a month early, works at m$). We had a great time with it. Destructible environments ftw.

Planning on purchasing it tomorrow. I remember the good old days of playing Mercs 1 on PS2 and having fun stealing the North Korean choppers, using it to disguise and infiltrate their bases, killing everyone with my rpg/light machine gun, beating the shit out of and incapacitating the target person, calling in a carpet bomb on the whole area, calling in an evac to airlift the target out, and watching the place go to hell while I drive safely away in my jeep. I honestly see it as a game that is like GTA but with more of a military theme to it, there is a somewhat drab storyline that advances you and unlocks better stuff, but the most interesting part of the game is the freedom that lets your creativity do whatever you want. While playing Mercs 1 I always wished they would of brought it to PC, because I know it would be a hundred times better, my wish came true!

Coming from someone who loved the first Mercs, I would give Mercs 2 a tentative buy if you're a Mercs 1 fan.

Setting aside generational differences (IE graphics, online play, larger environments), Mercs 2 is not quite as good as Mercs 1. Part of that is the location they chose, Korea was just a more interesting locale.

The factions and their relationships made more sense than they do in Mercs 2. Now, you've got to remember which factions like and dislike each other. In Mercs 1, you could just guess that that AN  SK and CN  NK.

The VIP engine in Mercs 1 was a ton better. The Deck of 52 concept was straightforward, I have no idea why they dropped it for #2. Plus, in #1 all the VIPs were NK so it was cool with all the factions to take them. Now, the VIPs are in each different faction, so you have to be careful which ones you capture and in which order so that you don't ruin your rep.

There are some things that are better. The minigame for jacking tanks is pretty cool and the grapple for helicopters is something that was sorely needed.

Put another way, there have been many worse action titles released this year. Mercs is a solid way to spend your time.

It is. Think GTA3 on steroids with destructible environments. :)

I loved the first one on the PS2. I may pick up the PC version if I can get a steal on eBay. Sounds like I shouldn't pay more than $20 for it though.

What are you supposed to do? I don't quite get it.

There are different cut scenes, but basically, you hit Y as soon as you are close to the turret of the tank, and your character will proceed to jump on top and go to the opening hatch and hit a button to try and open it. A guy will come out and try and push you off or you steal a nade and you have to hit the corresponding button on screen or if it wants you to, tap the button quickly, and then you'll proceed to overtake him and steal the tank.

It does that for all the tanks you jack and helicopters. I don't know if it works on cars or not. I haven't tried that.

This is pretty much accurate. I'm also a bit irked that they got rid of the deck of 52, but the grappling on choppers is very nice, and they made the choppers a bit less overpowered than they were in the original. It's kindof a silly game, for example you can drive a sports bike head on into a semi and you'll just fall off and lay stunned for a bit, and you won't die if shot in the face by a single rpg; but it more or less follows the spirit of the original (sandbox world, do what you want) with a few nice changes.

in the options menu [keyboard/mouse] - look on the left side - you should see icons [up, down, left, right, jump, reload, etc].

jump icon = space
melee icon = F
use icon = E
reload icon = R

I can run it at 1600x1200, but that will not help this game.
The textures are awful and that makes the game look bad. I realize consoles have texture memory problems, but damn, these textures look like they were done by a first year intern. Sad, really sad.

It is just another consolized pc port.

Oh no they didn't!

So, meh reviews for the PC + no demo =
Torrent is ~7.5GB.. how can the game be that big with such crappy textures? It doesn't even seem worth the download.

I've been asking myself the same question.
I looked at the install folder and it is 1.1Gb for movies (that are poor quality), sound 1.34GB, 2.87Gb for rest of data files, levels, textures, and such.

From playing the game and now looking at the size of it, I can only figure these people knew nothing of compression.

1.3GB for sound files ? Definitely they need to learn how to use an mp3 file.
