I work in a close environment at my bank. I sit on a trading floor where my "group" of 5 people are within 10 feet.

In regards to $400 vs $50 - unless you're pairing those $400 shoes with $400 pants and $200 shirt, why bother spending that much money on shoes? No one is going to notice the difference anyway.
My pants are Brooks Brothers @125, my shirt was about $60. I notice a huge difference.

I worked heavy construction. $400.+ White's work boots are the norm in the type of work I specialized in.
Sure, you have the occasional cheapskate who thinks that Red Wings are just as good, and that he can throw away $150-$200/pair every year or so, whereas I send my White's in for a rebuild. (costs about the same as a new pair of Red Wings, but the boots are FAR superior to anything Red Wing has to offer.)
If you work at MickeyD's, I doubt you'll find $300 shoes on anyone, but if you work in a job in finance, banking, stocks & bonds, etc., I'll bet they're much more common than you think.
I do work in that environment. First off, if I walked in with $50 shoes, it'd look pretty bad. I don't work with clothing snobs, such as people at Goldman Sachs, but there are certain things that you need to do to adhere to what's expected. Walking around in shit shoes isn't. My suit's are all BB 1818 Madisons and my shoes are all nice to go with them.
Even when I wasn't working in this industry and at a corporation I always wore better shoes. Why? Because they do last longer while looking far better.
Some people just don't get quality stuff and how well it is built. Your RW vs Whites anecdote is on the mark.
What it comes down to is, if you like something to last, then pay the money for it. If it lasts and looks good while doing it, then pay the money for it. If you see no utility in that, don't. However, to simply say it doesn't make sense is retarded.
