Mens shoes

I'm looking for a new pair of shoes to wear to work. I don't want anything weird or "in fashion", just a plain old conservative black or brown business shoe. Not looking for the wal-mart brand or the el-cheapo stuff, but something reasonably priced would be nice....

What brands have you found comfortable/uncomfortable etc? Long lasting vs useless in 2 months etc.

Any suggestions?

Umm... I'm afraid that would not go over exactly as I'd like in the corporate office 😉

Hey, ya' never know....Shake things up a bit. Tell your bosses you're ready to kick some serious ass and you have the boots on to prove it.

😀

I have a pair of inexpensive Bostonian captoe oxfords for business (interviews, court, etc.). For around the office I wear some J.Crew plain oxfords. I don't think you can go wrong with Johnston & Murphy or Cole Haan. If you want to buy a good pair that will last you about 10 years, Allen Edmonds is highly recommended.

I've used a lot of different brands over the years. I routinely shine, or have mine shined, take them to cobblers to get resoled...etc.

Rockport - Don't last long, can't be resoled easily, look bad quickly and are harder to keep in good shape. Comfortable, but

Florsheim - Same as Rockport.

Johnston Murphy - Used to be far better. However, they've recently switched manufacturers and such. I have one pair that started wrinkling badly on one shoe. I have another brown pair that split in the front-ball insole area. The rubber (my only rubber soles) is thin. Lining ripped easily.

Allen Edmonds - Good for mid-grade shoes. can be found at decent prices. A shoe like the Park Avenue will last 20 years with regular resoling/refurbishment.

Other, more higher-end brands, might be Peal&Co (Brooks Brothers).

I usually stay away from rubber soles, colored insoles (ink stains on the socks), poor lining inside (rips), and poor stitching.

at this point, I'd only really buy AE or higher. All of the rest is shit that'll not last more than a year or two.

My Allen Edmond and Brooks Brothers shoes are the best I've owned. I too used to like Johnston and Murphy, but the quality is now little better than Rockport, imo.

I wear whatever doesn't hurt. For some reason my foot is a strange shape. Usually shoes either push against my big toe near the base of it, hurt my pinky toe, or are too loose.

It's a shame about JM. My parents bought me some about 10 years ago before I graduated from HS (suit + shoes as a grad present). They still look good. The two newer ones look like shit compared to the older ones.

Have to disagree about the longevity of the Florsheims and Johnston & Murphys.

I have a pair of Florsheims that are 5 years old right now and all they need is a new sole, which is expected since they have rubber soles and are worn often.

As far as Johnston and Murphy, I have a pair of black Meltons (leather sole) that are about 6 years old now and still in great shape, as well as a new (6 month old) pair of Samfords (rubber sole) that are wearing in quite well (though the original laces broke after about a week, that's my only complaint so far).

Rubber soles do wear faster, but the improvement in comfort is incredible. My pair of Johnston and Murphy Samfords feel like slippers. It's great having a shoe that feels as good at the end of the day as it did at the beginning.

I own many pairs of dress shoes, here is my experience.

Ferragamo - Very expensive, but the most comfortable shoe I've ever worn.
Mezlan - Looks great, but they are uncomfortable and are expensive
To Boot New York - Also expensive, but a solid, good comfortable shoe
Rockport - Dont look so great, ultra comfortable, not expensive
Aldo - Hit or miss. Some are great, some are terrible.
Kenneth cole - Not comfortable, look good, not badly priced.
Johnston & Murphy - Overpriced for what you get IMO, but a good shoe
Cole Haan - Not cheap, but good and comfortable
Hugo boss - Not cheap, and really depends which shoe you get.

Stay away from the el cheapo Stacy Adams, Georgio Brutini, etc.

Johnston & Murphy and Cole Haan moved their production overseas a while back. CH was bought out by Nike. I think they still have a line of higher quality shoes made in the U.S., but I may be mistaken. Allen Edmonds is one of a few shoemakers who still make their shoes in the U.S.

Eh, I just wear some $25 Target brand shoe to work. Does the job fine. I have some nicer shoes at home but I forget the brand.

I am wearing $20 black shoes <Route 66 from Kmart> for the last 6 months and they are very comfortable. If they last for another 6 months or 1 year, I think I got my money worth.

I just picked up a pair of Kenneth Cole shoes on Clearance for $20. This is my third Kenneth Cole pair and I really like them.

On a related note: I am looking for a pair of black tennis-type shoes for use at work. I *can't* wear dress shoes with the low sides due to some hardware I have in one ankle. I have a pair of new balance black shoes that look great, but they trap so much moisture in that it is starting to cause serious problems. Anyone have any recommendations?

You know I never really look at the brand of dress shoes I'm buying, I just get what I think look decent, feel comfortable, and are reasonably priced ($100-$150ish).
