sprint because hurdles slow you down

So how does that make sprint harder? It's easier if anything.

I think hurdle requires 100% focus not just speed. If you go out of focus for even a millisecond, you risk hitting the hurdle.

Topic Title: men's 100m Sprint vs. 110m Hurdle
Topic Summary: poll!
Post: ?

Yet, the question actually is... Which is a harder sport? The question in the poll title isn't exactlly soliciting the correct responses. I read the first 3 items and answered. Then I noticed the poll title asks which is harder...

there's no comparison. Even though I mostly did mid and long siatnce in track, I've done both. Anything with hurdles is insanely difficult. 400 Hurdles is even worse.

I put on this poll inspired by the news that yesterday a Canadian woman, a world champion, hit the 1st hurdle and fell and knocked out the Russian in the next lane. And today Allen Johnson of US, a 4-time world champion, hit the 9th hurdle and crashed out. Even the best can make this kind of mistake. Seems like hurdle is indeed a tougher event.

I think so too, but media always seems more interested in 100m sprint.
The media doesn't care what is the hardest. To me, anything that lasts about 50-60 seconds is the hardest of all - regardless of the sport. A 50-60 second 400 m race (add hurdles if you are good) or a 50-60 second swimming race, or a 50-60 second rowing race, etc. Those are the damn hard events. But the media doesn't care about how hard one is. Instead the media cares about how fast one is.

This man is the world's fastest human! <- That is an eye catching headline. Nothing reasonable with 100 m hurdles will be as eye catching as that.

The hurdles is harder, the sprint is more exciting (to me at least).

Anyone know why the women run a 100m hurdles and and the men run 110?

I guess men have longer jumps, thus require longer interval between the 10 hurdles.

I would definetly agree with the 50-60 seconds thing. My little brother runs track (almost made Junior Olympics in the 100, 200, and 400). The 400 is his best event, but this past year he decided to not run the 400 competitvely because it takes way too much out of him. It's not uncommon for him to vomit from overexertion after running the 400.

And, he's never run the hurdles, because that's too hard.
