Men should sit down to urinate.

A Taiwanese minister has caused widespread debate on hygiene by suggesting that men should sit down while urinating instead of standing up.

Stephen Shen, Environmental Protection Administration (EPA) minister, said that sitting on the toilet like women do creates a cleaner environment.

This has generated a lot of online debate, says the BBC's Cindy Sui.

Officials are to ask local governments this week to put up notices in public places advising men to sit.

While many women in social media websites favour the suggestion, a lot of men say it would be hard to stop doing what they are used to, our correspondent in Taipei adds.

But EPA officials insist that it can be done.

"We want to learn from Japan and Sweden," said Yuan Shaw-jing, EPA director general of environmental sanitation and toxic substance maintenance.

"In Japan, we heard 30% of the men sit," he added.

Inspectors regularly grade Taiwan's estimated 100,000 public toilets, with most of receiving high marks. But EPA officials say there is room for improvement, as some toilets are still smelly because of urine spatter.

While the agency said that it cannot force men to change their habits, it will ask local governments this week to put notices in public toilets with the suggestion.

As for Mr Shen, the EPA confirmed that he himself practices what he suggests - at home and while using public toilets.

It is really hard to take Mr. Shen seriously.

Well, it would prevent all the 'sprinkles' i see on public toilet seats (seriously, fuck people who can't aim).

I almost like the sprinkles more than the pool around the front of the toilet. For all intents and purposes, I have to spread my legs and give birth to avoid stepping in that.

1. Don't they have urinals in Taiwan?
2. Urine is sterile (pretty much)
3. Unless they're talking about guys who stand up to drop a deuce, this seems pointless

As stupid and un-manly as that sounds...for many guys, it's probably the best choice. They can't seem to hit the commode or urinal, no matter how close they stand.

"Gentlemen, please aim straight...the next guy might have holes in his shoes."

Sitting on toilets probably is more sanitary and makes more sense. Most toilets have piss sprayed all around them.

But its not "manly", so...

So if this happens then everyone will complain about nasty man-ass on their toilet seats instead of a few sprinkles.

Men can't win against the effeminate.

i was taking a shit at work last week and someone went in the stall next to me to pee.

he dropped his pants all the way down around his ankles, to the ground, like he was going to take a shit.

but nope, he faced the toilet and i heard him pissing standing up. i could even see his belt down around his ankles so his pants were dropped all the way.

some people have some odd fucking habits in the bathroom.

The Japs probably do it because they look like chicks anyway. Seriously. You ever see their pop stars? They do their damnest to look like girls. I guess it's hip to pretend to have a vag over there. Men even buy girls undergarments out of vending machines, so who knows what secrets Japs hide in their pants.

"Japs" is not an accepted term for the Japanese.

It's an ethnic slur and it's not allowed here.

Clearly putting you butt where many people have before is more sanitary ^_^

Because of unisex toilets and they have to share the toilets with men at home.

Please, unixsex toilets are not common. and somehow I doubt that the kind of woman talking about men's toilet preferences has a man at home.
