It's funny, I have a few friends who grew up in European countries who served in their military (mandatory). None of them talk about it like you guys here do. They did the mandatory duty and then went out and got their education and worked hard for what they have now. Serving in the military doesn't make you a good person and quite frankly I think we hold this up too high as a profession in this country.

However -

Social Security accounts for 24% while Medicaid accounts for 25%. Another 10% goes towards "safety net" programs. So "social" programs cost almost 4x what the military costs.

You are being fleeced - but its not by the military. Take your own advice and do a little research.

I think mandatory civil service is an excellent idea. Doesn't have to be the military - but everyone should have to spend 2-4 years providing a service back to their country. No exceptions.

There is plenty of stories of this country thanking the military personel when they get injured and are untreated/or treated poorly and left with no one to care.

But my point was choice. To many in the military, they choose the military because it is the only viable option out of economic despair. . That's all I'm saying. . Many of the people choose to be in the military because they have no choice. Choice implies that there are other viable career paths.

Reread my post. . I just did to make sure i didn't loose my sanity. . I simply said that saying that people only choose the military by choice is a false statement. The best estimate i found was that 40% choose the military out of economic despair. Not that the military collects and reports these metrics. . Weird that they ignore such data, huh.

Ill let you assign how much appreciation i provide to others in the military. . You provide the multiple that i need to use when multiplied by the level of appreciation others give me.

That's a good indicator of how much your country cares about their heros.



Same can be said for Police and Fireman. These people risk their life as well.

In the end it's the PEOPLE that show these professions how much we value them and care about them.

In America we value them with words, like HERO etc.

While with action, let's face it.....we don't really give a shit.

Well, much like my friends who served their countries with mandatory military service, I expect that I would have done my duty and gotten out as soon as possible.

Fleeced is right. There was a time when things like Medicare could negotiate. Big Business wasn't about to have any of that.

I Agree 100% and it should also be mandatory here in the US also. If it was Mandatory here it would change how highly it is viewed.

Fleeced is right. There was a time when things like Medicare could negotiate. Big Business wasn't about to have any of that.

Medical equipment and supply contractors make a killing from Medicare/Medicaid and covered persons get no major deal. I got my CPAP machine through Medicare with 20% co-pay on my part, which was around $340. With a prescription order from my physician, I could purchase the same unit new online for $460 shipped, included one year's supplies, replacement tubing, filters, etc. On top of that, they added a fat 'consult/fitting/setup/education' charge from a respiratory therapist. It took a whole 15 minutes for them to fit me with a mask, set the pressure level (which is chosen by the doctor), tell me how to use it (which I already knew since I worked in patient care, have an IQ above 85 and can read/follow directions. It came with a patient education brochure and DVD). I had to drive to their location, otherwise it would have been on-premises delivery charge. Can't remember exactly how much their Medicare reimbursement was all told but I do remember they collected just over $1000 including my co-pay, for a machine they probably pay $400 for because they purchase a couple-few dozen per month.

It's a major racket they have going.

You draw the very wrong conclusion from the facts. The amount wasted on military spending should not be nearly as large a share it is compared to retirement and healthcare.
