memory prices

Relative the cyclical nature of memory prices, where do we stand in the cycle right now? Are prices on the up or downtrend? And are we near the top, bottom, or middle of the cycle?

if they're anything right now, I'd say they're slightly high... based on what i've seen recently @ crucial.com

I'd say ram is medium priced right now. I've seen in the PC2100 days 256MB crucial sticks swing from $29 to $105.

Yeah I remember buying two sticks at $37 a piece... two days later they were at $65 each.

EDIT: Yeah they are medium-low right now. Go ahead and buy instead of hoping they will go lower just to save a few bucks...

Prices aren't bad at all right now prices last year at this time seemed to climb a little highier every day till Xmas then dropped like a bomb on the chinese new year. Now they seem to be pretty stable and don't seem to be unresaonable except for the new stuff like PC4000 and highier.

It seems I recently read a report on this topic. My recollection was their opinion is that mem prices are a little low right now. I just bought some matched corsair for upgrade. I'll try to find the article and post back

I also read a couple articles over the last few months that basically indicated the prices were stagnant. There isn't a whole lot of demand for the new DDR433 and higher chips, since JEDEC hasn't ratified anything past DDR400 officially, and AMD motherboards can't run their FSBs that high. DDR demand has been pretty much flat, and the supply seems stable.

The only thing that's been fluctuating a lot lately (that I can tell) are chips made from the discontinued Winbond BH-5 DDR (such as Mushkin Level 2 Black), which is the best-performing DDR400/433 RAM available right now. However, it seems Winbond may be starting production back up for these chips, as the new OCZ Platinum 3500 is using them (see today's review).

Based on the last 2 or 3 years it seems that around May/June/July for some reason is when memory is the cheapest. I know this past June I got a Crucial 512MB PC2700 stick for $45. I also remember the year before last I was upgrading my system around this time period and PC2100 was really cheap, I got 2 Crucial 256MB sticks for a low price.
