memory and cpu question

Ok I just got my new 64 3700 SD dialed in at 2625 Mhz (250x 10.5) and I have a gig of DDR 500 in my machine. My asus a8v deluxe gives me the options of these concerning my memory speed:

memclock mode: auto or limit
I choose limit and another option appears..
memclock to cpu ratio: 1:1 (DDR 200); 4:3 (DDR 266); 3:2; 5:3 (DDR 333); 2:1 (DDR400)
I realize that these values next to the ratios are for the stock fsb of 200 on a 64 processor. I would assume that I would want 2:1 since I'm using ddr ram. and 250fsbx2 = ddr500 which is what I have in the computer. Is that the correct setting?
 
I wouldnt call it 2:1 ratio ('cause it's not) but yes, that's the option you want. One thing, though: ram cannot use half dividers so your ram would either run at 2625MHz/11 or 2625MHz/10, I dont know which 'cause I never use half multipliers for cpu.
 
K I thought so. I'm not worried about it running at 2625/11 or /10. It's so close to a 1:1 ratio it won't make that much of a difference. thanks for the help.

Ok I'm not sure if this has something to do with me selecting 2:1 as opposed to 1:1 but it didn't happen before I changed the setting. Does anyone know what causes an error like this and or how to fix it? Thanks.
 
ok I changed it back to 1:1 and it seems to have gone away. but it my memory running at speed of ddr 250 (if there was such a thing) or ddr500 like I want it to be?
 
no...

you want to run 1:1... i dunno why it's ddr200... it should be ddr400

so running 1:1 at 250 HTT gives you ddr500.

that's why 1:1 works...

also don't use 1/2 mults... as it tricks you into thinking your ram is running faster than it really is...

so my guess is is that your ram isn't really running at 250 but something lower
 
The dividers on that board are labeled terrible. It's the only board I know thats labeled that way, the ratios pertain to the HTT before it is doubled unlike any other board. You do want to use the 2:1 DDR400 setting, every other board calls it 1:1. You may have to up the volts or adjust the timings to get rid of the error. Use CPUZ and or Clockgen to see what your actual ram speed is. With 10.5x250 and DDR200 your ram is running a crappy 120mhz(DDR240) less than half its rated speed.

And as others said don't use the .5 multis, they are misleading. That chip should be able to do 11 x 250. I'm currently running mine 11 x 255

so what's your vcore at? because mine is either 1.5 or 1.525 and I get random reboots at 11x 250. My cpu is already running at 50C under load and no telling where it would be if I increase vcore. I have a zalman copper heatsink ($50) and arctic silver thermal paste. Hopefully the silver just needs to set and it will cool off in a day or so. I agree with you on the memory that in the case of the mobo, they are referring to the 2:1 ratio of the memory that occurs when you double the fsb (dual data rate memory). Howerever, I bought ddr 500 just so I wouldn't have to oc my ram and it should run at 2:1 w/ 250 fsb without increasing the voltage... I'm not sure what the deal is.


EDIT: alright I upped the vcore to 1.55 from 1.525 and now I'm at 250x11. What's interesting is that my asus probe utility for monitoring voltages and temps says that my vcore is now at 1.502 and when I had it set at 1.525 it read 1.478. hmm...

before I go to bed I'll set my memory back up to 2:1 and up the ddr voltage and run prime95 all night. any suggestions on what voltage to set it at? I have the option of auto; 2.6; 2.7; 2.8.. Thanks..
 
Ok I can't even get it to boot at 2:1 now, not even if I increase the ddr voltage to 2.8. So I set it on auto and cpu-z says the memory is running at 194 Mhz but also says its max is 250mhz (1/2 of 500) so I was thinking that maybe its running at 388 (194x2) which isn't 1:1 but its getting closer. I'll be running prime95 all night just to see what happens. I got another memory error message even with the memory setting on 1:1 so that wasn't the problem.
 
if your ram doesnt work at ddr500 you might want to check your timings, I'd loosen them considerably to check if that's whats wrong. You can always readjust them later
 
WOW I have a serious problem. Started prime95 last night and went to bed. I wake up this morning and here's what it says...

That is not good. Ok it was a freakin $180 stick of memory I would hope that it is not the source of the problem. I will admit I have a shistey power supply but I'd like to know the problem before I go replacinbg or returning hardware that is fine.. Any thoughts?

EDIT: the timings aren't that tight to begin with, 3-4-4-8
Any programs to monitor ddr voltage? because I noticed newegg says the memory should run on 2.8V I do have my old psu which is an off brand also and only 350 watts while the current one is 650 and an off brand. I know you aren't supposed to go for power and no name brands but it was 20 bucks lol. I may try the old one and report back. I get a "cpu fan error" in dos when I set the ddr voltage to 2.8 lol. hmm.
 
Maybe I'll try updating my bios, asus has an ezflash utility and seems pretty foolproof. You don't have to reformat or anything after flashing do you?

Nope. Just don't screw up, otherwise you won't have a mobo anymore, just a useless piece of hardware. Good luck 🙂.
 
It sounds like you have a memory/CPU problem. One of the two isn't liking the OC. To see if its your mem, run like 8x250 or something, use the DDR400 setting. Run memtest86, and see what you get. If you bought DDR500 RAM, and it doesn't run it, you'll want to RMA.

Otherwise, its your CPU. Either Up vcore, or lower your multi.
 
It wouldn't boot at 8x250 with the ram at 2:1 best I can get is 5:3 at 2.8V and cpu-z says its running at 211.5Mhz... what should I do?

EDIT: mmk I failed prime95 again, same exact thing. I think I'm going to rma the memory and get something else. value ddr 500 lol
 
If your ram won't even boot at 250, you have a serious problem. What exactly kind of RAM do you have? It might require 3.2v or something that your mobo can't use, but if its rated for DDR500 at 2.6v or something then your RAM is pretty flaky. RMA time.
 
EDIT: ok I put my ddr 333 in and set the div to 4:3 (250x4/3 = 333) cpu-z reads 161 Mhz. x2 that is 322. close enough. I'll be returning the crucial ballistix and getting kingwin ddr 500.
 
Ok just to update anyone reading here's my prob.

I have my 64 3700 @ 250x11 and had ddr500 in that would not run at the correct memory setting in bios for some reason. and even running it at 250Mhz (half of what its supposed to run at) I failed prime95 tests. now I put my ddr 333 in and have the divider @ 4:3 so my memory is running @ basically 166 while my cpu is @ 250. inefficent I know.
However, with this old ram that I have run in my p4 box for 2 years, I also fail prime95 on the first test just as with the ddr500. I mentioned earlier taht I have a crappy psu and I put my old, also crappy one in it and I seemed to get somewhat better results but in the end I'm still failing memory tests. The fact that both configs of memory fail prime95 makes me think the problem is cpu or psu related and not memory. Does anyone agree? Or have any insight? I would love to be able to play games on my new rig... kinda what I built it for lol. thanks.

EDIT: if you think timings could solve the problem I'm open to suggestions as I have no idea what I would set them at. just give me something to try. I think I posted the current timings earlier.
 
Bummer, sorry to hear of all your troubles. It could well be your PS, have you checked the voltages on the three rails 12v 5v and 3.3v using Asus probe under load? Generic PS's are generally bad news for O/C even if they have a high wattage ratting.

I would also try Priming with 250mhz HTT, a low multi like 8, and DDR200 mem setting. If you still get errors in prime, this could be an indication that the board isn't getting enough stable voltage to sustain a high HTT. Where you able to run high HTT with your previous CPU?

If you think memory timings could be the problem, loosen them up to like 3-4-4-10.

Keep your chin up and keep pluggin🙂 you will eventually find the problem
