From what I know most of the effect is due to having better sleep quality, rather than an inherent benefit of melatonin itself.

And Bateluer, if you're reading this...I told you so.

My concern about this and why I would be hesitant about starting a melatonin regimen, is worrying that if by taking this hormone your body's natural production of the hormone declines, leaving you completely reliant on this pill for restful sleep.

I had read that taking testosterone had this effect which is why I asked.

As far as I know melatonin has few adverse effects, and no tolerance. However, in terms of inducing sleep, it is also not very good. It's not like benzodiazepines or other conventional sleeping agents, it simply helps move the body's circadian rhythms by half an hour or so. If you weren't going to be sleepy until 3am in the first place, taking melatonin won't magically make you want to go to sleep at 10.

I tried it last night and it's something that you really don't want to do on a working day. I was already sleepy before I took one so I figured that I'd take one to see if it would help me sleep better but all it did for me was make me feel droopy for 2 hours before i could actually fall asleep. Save it for the weekend if you want to give it a try.

I have experience with this stuff btw. For reasons unknown the joint stuff I got (glucosamine and chondroitin) threw Melatonin in it. After about a week, I began having very vivid dreams. Soon it was vivid nightmares. It was exhausting in the morning. Oddly enough, it almost had the reverse effect. I think it puts you in a deep sleep, but I felt like I ran a marathon every night. Every dream I had was like a Jason Stratham movie. I eventually stopped taking the stuff due to this reaction.

this isn't really news to me... it's something i've been saying for a while now. it just went unnoticed because i'm "just a chiropractor".

Which part are you saying isn't news to you? Melatonin doesn't really have a good research backing for sleep or for weight loss. Neither of those sites are research articles and don't really mean a whole lot. They're both general summaries of research articles, neither from a well-established journal. In addition, they're taking the nonscientific route and linking correlation as causation.

The first website doesn't actually cite its study and the second study referred to is a rat study. The results haven't even come close to being repeated in humans.
