5 AFL-CIO unions form dissident group

I actually agree with some of the statements being made by the groups threatening to leave.
"Our world has changed. The world that all workers live in has changed, but quite frankly the labor movement has not changed to meet the changes," said Joe Hansen, president of the United Food and Commercial Workers union.
I agree. Plus there is the whole politics issue of things.
the dissidents reply that unions' much beefed-up political efforts in recent years have neither helped them nor put their candidates into office.

Might be time for labor to get back to working for the workers instead of playing politics...no?

Unions need to adapt in order to survive.. they could still have a place if they realize the world has changed.

Hardly. It's time for the unions to go global. If it works for businesses, it'll work for unions also.

So they shouldn't be getting back to working for the workers? You want them to go global instead?
Don't you see that the Unions have marginalized themselves with their politics - thus compromising their "working for workers"?

Oh well, if they don't want to wake up to reality - they can continue to decline - just remember that they had plenty of opportunity to change so it's no one's fault but their own.

Let the damn thing implode or explode. You're exactly right (gulp)...Unions playing too much politics and have too much power at the top....the little man at the bottom is more a tool for the top than the top being a tool for the average man.

IMO!

UAW sucks ass also.

If American auto companies want to compete (and prosper) against/with the Japanese, simple answer: Remove the UAW.

You clearly have your head buried in the sand. Each day I come here instead of posting real news, you post things about unions, cbs, the united nations, or some media outlet having a liberal bias. Ever heard of Iraq or the economy? You should walk into a military hospital right now to grab a sense of reality with young men and women laying beds brain damaged, without eyes, and missing arms and legs. Instead you spend your day just like the rest of the corporate media filling this board with worthless hot air. You can't hide from the truth forever.

I'm reviving this thread based on recent developments:
Teamsters, SEIU Decide to Bolt AFL-CIO

Jolting organized labor, the Teamsters and a massive service employees' union decided Sunday to bolt the AFL-CIO, paving way for two other labor groups to sever ties in the movement's biggest schism since the 1930s.
The days of big organized labor are numbered, finally.

Unions bankrupted the steel industry, ship building industry, and nearly bankrupted the auto industry (averted only because the Big Three promised exorbitant wage and benefit plans it ultimately couldn't afford in exchange for the union allowing it to bring productivity and manufacturing out of the 1920s).

We will remember all the good things unions did, nor forget all the bad. Good riddance.

Unfortunately, public employee unions will remain entrenched for many decades to come, since government can run deeply in the red year after year, paying wages and benefits vastly higher than similar work in the private sector. Tax payers pick up the tab with no expectation of a return.

Interesting thought. Manufacturing jobs are moved from the US to other countries because of cheap labor and tax friendly governments. Unions go global and expand into this virgin territory. They unionize everything so beloved patriot and his buddies can demand $20/hr. The governments go along with it and institute an income tax to collect extra revenues. Jobs migrate back to the US.

Unions have been a good thing for this country in the past. They need to make themselves relivent again. I think that most of the workers that pay the dues of the guys up top are fed up with the way things are going.

More Unions should be like the Building Trade Unions that invest in the trade, give loans to building developers and are willing to concede when it is necessary. They ubnderstand that Contractors and Developers need to be profitable to keep their members working.

I tried to find it - I was hoping it would at least be some sort of blaze of glory but I found no such thing...

Nice spin. The bigger question is what the Democrats will do without the money and organizing power of one of the largest unions and Democratic party support bases in the country.
