Yes! Our manhood is defined by how readily we take unnecessary risks. Brilliant!
I have to meet them somewhere. If I choose to pick a PD over a gas station, what fucking difference does it make to you? Do you feel all big bad and awesome now?
Go you.
It has nothing to do with wanting to appear 'internet tough' or whatever. Your logic is just faulty. You made the thread to broadcast your assumption that anyone not wanting to do business with you at a police station has criminal intentions. This is false.
I'm going to go out on a limb here, and assume that in your first post, 'as soon as I said' actually means 'as soon as I typed.' Would I be correct in that assumption?
You simply need to realize two things: 1) To many people (i.e. buyers), insisting on a meet at a PD makes you seem strange and paranoid and 2) Actually conversing with people is different from texting and/or emailing. I would question someone's intentions much less if I actually heard their voice and was able to question why they are so insistent on a PD meet. A simple statement of 'I just want to be as safe as possible' and 'I've heard local cops actually recommend this to curb issues with sales initiated on craigslist' would be easier for me to stomach than a text message of 'MUST MEET AT POLICE DEPARTMENT.' If, OTOH, the person came off as a paranoid hermit during this brief discussion, I would not deal with them. Apologies if you are indeed speaking with people on the phone and I'm making false assumptions here.
But, in general, you just don't seem to realize that while you're looking at everyone as possibly wanting to rob you of your Xbox...they are looking at you as possibly wanting to rob them of their cash. And the latter is a hell of a lot more likely. Cash is not going to be traced. Your item is...an item. It has the extra step of needing to be resold to convert to cash. And there's a very traceable serial number associated with it...it gets logged when a store sells it. I want to say eBay asks for it, but I may be wrong there. Pawn shops would have that serial on the 'stolen goods' list that they get from the police. And if (when) the console is connected to the internet, I'm sure it is identifiable.
So the best route for reselling an Xbox stolen via craigslist sale...is craigslist. At which point...why even steal it? Might as well just say you have an Xbox and then rob potential buyers.
But by all means, stay locked in your house to avoid all 'unnecessary risks.' There are a lot of them, by your definition.
