media player help

hello there.........noob who needs some computer help regarding my media player

I have windows xp home edition and windows media player version 10

the problem is that sometimes when I download a movie file, when the download finishes and I try to play the movie, windows media plauer disappears.totally and without explanation, the damn thing just goes away.

and even if I click on another movie file, nothing at all happens.it goes so far that even if I go into the start menu and click on windows media player, nothing happens, its as thought the computer refuses to let me even get into the media player at all.

and it will not even play streaming movies or anything after that.the pisser of it all though is that the file itself that was downloaded is on the harddrive, and in fact if I right click it and use the "open with" option and use real media or intervideo windvd,it works, plays like a charm...........but windows media player is dead and gone kaput and cannot be pulled up or tweaked.

the only way I have been able then to use windows media player again when this happens is to do a system restore to an earlier date, which is a real pain,to say the least.

so,what causes this, and what can be done to prevent it??? anybody who can help with this will be greatly appreciated.

ps........I have tried to unistall and reinstall the media player form control panel, and it flashes the message that I must first lose the program.......but if it isn't accessable it certainly isn't closable.

this is happening quite frequently, and I am getting quite frustrated with it.

So even if you use system restore, eventually Media Player is rendered nonfunctional?

I think you have to look at what might be changing in your system that could be causing this. Are you installing anything?

- Have you installed the latest Windows security updates? There are several security holes in Media Player.

- Media player is rediculously easy to exploit. You should disable certain features that invite trojan infection. In Media Player options, Privacy tab, uncheck EVERYTHING.

I would strongly suspect Spyware. There a several versions of CoolWebSearch and other malware that infects Media Player. Please see my detailed spyware cleaning instructions here: http://soldcentralfl.com/flyingpenguin/penguin_blog.shtml#spyware-removal

Have you tried re-installing the latest version of Media Player? Perhaps there's a corrupt core file.

Actually, the greatest favor you can do for yourself is NOT use Media Player. It's a buggy, security holed, code bloated piece of junk. I highly recommend BSPlayer. It's free.

Hope this helps...

Media player isn't a very good player...

Usually it's not a problem caused directly by media player but one of the codecs it uses.
I'd try installing the latest ms codec update or the k-lite codec pack. Either of these may fix problems with media player codecs.

If that fails I'd find out exactly which codecs are in use when media player crashes by using one of the other players that doesn't have a problem with the file. Once you know what files/codecs cause the problem you may be able to find a solution from that point.
