Media Center & PS3

I'm running good'ol XP Home, it's working, so I'm not messing with it. Now that the PS3 can stream content from networked media servers, I'd like take advantage of this.

Without going with a full blown MCE version of XP, or upgrading to Vista, what seems to be the best, or at least one of the better pieces of software out there to fill this role?

So far I've dabbled with MS Media Player 11, Twonky, and Cyberlink's Media server, and nothing has really impressed me yet. Cyberlink seems to be working the best so far, but.... I still need to re-encode a lot of my video for the PS3, as it doesn't seem to support much on it's own...

Any thoughts or suggestions are welcome... And if this is the wrong forum for this, sorry.. Seemed like best fit after the move to the new software...

Whoa, I was unaware of any other programs that allowed this besides Vista or XP MCE. I have a 360 and I want to stream stuff to it the cheapest way possible. I'll have to look into these methods you have described.

Tversity is a great Transcoder/Media Streamer and they just released the patch for the PS3 1.8 update. You do need a beefy system if you plan to transcode high def files. Tversity also works with the 360.

Thanks.. I had heard of that, then forgot about it.. Will definitely check it out and give it a try...

As for the transcoding, yah, not sure how much I'll do of that for HD content. Right now it'd just be basic SD content that might need it. Although, I suppose it'd save a step if I could just do that for my recorded HDTV off the air stuff I've just started grabbing on the PC. Too cheap to upgrade DirecTV to an HD DVR... 😉

Anyone else have some ideas?

TIA

What is this "HDTV off the air stuff" you're talking about? Is that what you get when you hook up the Terk antennas people are always talking about here? If so, sounds interesting...could someone point me to some more info?

HD Over the Air is just rabbit ears picking up local channels like we all used to do back before cable TV. The only thing you need is an HDTV with an ATSC tuner (standard def TVs and a few HDTVs only come with NTSC tuners) and a pair of rabbit ears (doesn't have to be HD specific, the ones from the 80s work just fine) and you can get the locals in HD.

Look at antennaweb.org to see what dgital OTA stuff is likely to be available in your location (and what antenna(s) you would need to be able to pick them up)

Thank you for the replies guys. I have been eyeing that 37" Westinghouse from the Hot Deals forum. Thinking about pulling the trigger. Apparently that TV has no tuners, so I guess I could not do the antenna thing with that. Any confirmation of this? I sure would like to try this out, as I get a great deal of pleasure from "free" stuff. =)

There are ways to get OTA HDTV on your computer via some video cards if you want a quick fix. I'm not sure about the particulars, but I'm pretty sure a friend rigged it up with just a coat hanger...

Hey i thought PS3 could run XVID , DVIX file 😉

Anyways all you need is to enable to Media file sharing on Windows Media Player 11 and then share the folder with videos/music/pics. Then make sure your firewall is configured to let the PS3 and WMP11 gain access to each other. Then stream your content on TV via the PS3 🙂

OK I just gave this a try last night. First I tried it with MP11, and that was actually able to feed my Xbox360 some material, however it was only able to play .WMV files. Damn, almost all my stuff is .AVI format. Any way to work around this without changing all my AVI's to WMV's (not sure how I would even do that)?

I also tried TVersity...I had it up and running, trying to figure out what the program actually does...and I couldn't figure it out. It certainly did not help me play any content on my 360 though.

I had high hopes when my 360 recognized my computer through the network, but they were shot down quickly thereafter.

OTA HDTV in my case is an Avermedia HDTV dual tuner card in my PC, hooked up to a roof antenna... Great HDTV for all the local network stations in my area, and some... Software with the card allows basic PVR stuff, so I can schedule and record HDTV content on my computer for later viewing there, or in this case, streaming to my PS3...

Media Player 11 works for the basic, but doesn't offer much for transcoding, etc... Good free basic option... Slow response caused many time-outs on PS3..

Twonky was similar to MP11, but less time-out issues...

TVersity I'm just setting up now, but so far so good... No issue with PS3 finding it, just haven't streamed much content yet...

Complaint on PS3: Time's out too quick over network, but doesn't really cause any major issues... Just re-click the movie/picture/song or what'ev you are trying to access and it'll work...

Wireless speed is okay for normal content, but best to go wired gigabit for HD content streaming...

Organizing Video files in Nero MediaHome on PS3

How do you get NMH to categorize the Videos? I have mine organized by folders on my hard drive (Drama, Horror, etc...), but all I get is a long alphabetical list on the PS3.

Side Notes:
Running Vista Home Premium
Using WMP for AVIs and DIVX and most MP4's ripped with RECODE(this works great)
Have a number of AppleTV encoded MP4's that do not play on PS3 using WMP, so need to transcode using NMH - this works fine except for lack of folder support.

Tried using TVersity to transcode these weird AppleTV MP4's but TVersity skewed aspect ratio of all video files. But at least it had folder categories.

Any help would be appreciated.
Thnx.

I use Tversity to serve media to my PS3 (and also make it available over the net). It can be frustrating, but it's the best combination I've found for:

1. Cost (it's free)
2. Transcodes files that PS3 can't play natively
3. Plays all my media files, including itunes music (aac files) and dvd rips
4. Serves the media not only to my player, but also over the internet

I use WMP11 without a problem. Streams great wirelessly, plays all my divx and xvid videos. Thats using XP Pro also.

WMP11 works just fine if you don't need to play .aac files, and you don't care about transcoding.

Is there any app that runs on the PS3 that gives you a better interface for browsing the media files? I use TVersity but the PS3 interfaces sucks monster donkey dong.

Not sure if there is a windows equivalent, but on OSX we can use a program called Medialink (from Nullsoft), which connects directly up to our iTunes library. Lets us browse the same way we do in iTunes (Playlists/Artist/Album/Genre/etc)
