My first stop in Canada for a party weekend was at a gas station.
I asked where their beer was and they said I had to go to the beer store.
I was like "WTFmate?"

I prefer having all the beer in one place rather than having a tiny selection at a store.

wow.

i am genuinely shocked.

i thought ontario would rather die than give up its monopoly on booze.

Ontario doesn't have a monopoly on Booze. Or, if you truly are convinced they do, it isn't going away.

Grocery stores will have the ability to sell 6-packs, nothing larger, that they are required to buy at the LCBO. Grocery stores will mark up for a slight margin.

The Beer Store is owned and operated by major breweries. Ontario owns none of it.

Ontario regulates the sale of alcohol and applies a hefty tax. That isn't changing, and it will never change, even if the Beer Store was not in existence and alcohol was only on sale at 7/11. It would still be heavily taxed and regulated, and Ontario would still make just as much now from alcohol sales through taxes as they do now.

The problem with the Beer Store is they don't. I had a good chat with one of the larger craft brewers out in Halifax and he told me it's damned near inpossible to get them to carry their product. It's long been a complaint from small and medium sized brewers. Giving the largest brewers a monopoly on beer sales allows them to push out or marginalize competition. Even if there is a demand for the product. Which is why you'll see some beers at the LCBO but not the Beer Store. The LCBO only does large orders though.

I've long argued that the individual stores should be showcasing local beer, like we do with VQA wine. The new ruling will allow small brewers to do that, but at other retail stores.

Given that there is a 24hr grocery store not far from home I am glad with the new change to selling beer in grocery stores. It's ridiculous that we have to go to a certain store, with usually inconvenient hours, to buy anything that contains alcohol.

I'm assuming the 24hr grocery stores will just lock the beer fridge after 3am.

Hooray for overpriced 6-packs! You won't find anything else at your grocery store.

Never been to a beer store here, I do find the government monopoly on liquor sales here to be complete and utter bullshit. Yet another shitty thing about this stupid city/province.

KT

Edit: cool pic though OP.

It's not a big deal when you realize there's an LCBO every other block🙂.

This is one of those weird threads where I learn a lot about local Canadian politics that I never expected to learn.

I kinda wish Beer/Wine was available at Grocery stores. More importantly though, I wish Taxes on it were not so high. I mean >$20 for a dozen beer is pretty farkin ridiculous.
