MBNA Mastercard has One-Time-Use Credit Card numbers

From what I understand, based on what I read at:
https://www.mbnashopsafe.com/

there are no hidden charges the way Discover (after 3 months without cancelling the number) and AMEX Blue (do they?) hit you with, for using their one time numbers. And Mastercard's added benefit is this:

you assign the $ amount the one time number has inside of it. If the merchant sneakily hits you off with extra charges, BAM - it's rejected.

I buy a lot of stuff at a lot of shady places, because that's where the hot deals are. Everyone knows about the Red Bird Dog Associates or some sh!t like that who were giving out the 'free' magazines for 1 year for $2.95.

Where's my muscle and fitness?

I cancelled my mastercard and got a new one, worrying my number would be circulating somewhere it shouldn't be after that one.

...i bet someone will find a hole in mastercard's wording and prove me wrong, and show me there are hidden charges. (I dare you) We'll all benefit then, (I won't get unholy bills for something I didn't know about) - and people know where to get these one time numbers to securely cash in on hot deals.

That's my 2 cents. BTW: got some killer deals on comparebookprices.com for my textbooks - thought i'd share while i was at it. summer session sucks :-(

oh yeah - you can also set the expiration date on these one time numbers in advance when you create it. no pesky calling discover's dumb operators to cancel these one time numbers. with discover if you forget to cancel one you get a 'convenience' fee.

TO SAVE THE WILDLIFE - get the MBNA National Wildlife Federation Mastercard. Small percentage goes to that legitimate organization. I mean I know all of you don't recycle and behave as earth friendly as I would probably want you to - but if we stop wasting time on these rewards cards which you never get any significant rewards from - and just put it to charitable purposes, we can collectively help the people who do care make a difference.

Just call 1-800-WEB-APPLY, and ask them for this cause related credit card. (Thanks guys)

Since this has some sort of charitable root behind it, a bump every now and then would be appreciated. 😀

I've been using it for a couple of months now and have generated about 10 numbers with it and used 8. So far no problems at all, except one late sunday night when it couldn't connect to their central computer and thus wouldn't generate me a number - I couldn't log into their system via the web either at the time.

The only real down side is that it seems to require Internet Explorer so it won't run on Linux or even Mozilla on windows, but that's not too hard to deal with.

Been using this for about 6 months. Many purchases, no problem. You can also use the number for offline purchases, 800 numbers and mail in orders.

<< TO SAVE THE WILDLIFE - get the MBNA National Wildlife Federation Mastercard. >>

Another worthy cause--help the open source movement by applying for the MBNA Linux fund mastercard. One percent of purchases goes to the Linux fund.
Just do a search for a MBNA Linux fund credit card, I don't have the link right now...

Besides, cashier or restaurant chicks really dig it.

with discover if you forget to cancel one you get a 'convenience' fee.

What? Discover charges for using the one-time use numbers? I didn't know this... uh oh...

Cool -- I just signed up!! I love my MBNA Platinum Mastercard... it's the only thing I use when shopping online. I've been wondering if they were offering this service.

Thanks!!😀

I've been using my MBNA Mastercard for over a year. Mine is a Barnes and Noble card and I get 1% back in the form of gift certificates to spend at Barnes and Noble. I love the ShopSafe numbers and use them all the time on the net. I've never had an unexpected charge. I love the flexibility: you can set a card for any amount and set the expiration for any amount of time from one month to one year. You can cancel a card online. If you generate one and don't use it, it just expires. I believe MBNA has a number of different branded cards, from rebates to worthy causes (my husband has one that benefits his alma mater).

Who really cares if someone commits fraud on your credit card? It's not your liablity at all, so even in the unlikely event that someone runs you card up you just dispute the charges and don't pay a cent. Oh yeah and credit protection programs is the stupidest thing I have ever seen..

I personally own both MBNA and Discover cards. Both are good cards with the feature one-time-use credit card numbers. I've been using this for months when shopping online. However, I never know Discover charges for this. Where you guys learned that from?

<< even in the unlikely event that someone runs you card up you just dispute the charges and don't pay a cent. >>

Going through the process of disputing a charge and providing documentation to support you claim is not fun, at best its a waste of time. Much better to avoid such problems altogether by giving questionable places a one-time number with a limit $ value.

Thanks guys, I've had an MBNA Visa for a while and didn't even know I had that service. Just used it and it's a piece of cake. Called to make sure, and there are no charges for the service. I feel much better buying from these sleazy places now (as bad as that sounds).

FOBioPatel, where did yo ulearn that Discover charges for this service? I use it often and has never been told Discover will charge me for using one-time-use credit card #. I called Discover to verify but the CSR didn't even know they have this kinda service. More information will be appreciated.

quoted from the discover thread - i hope i do this right... umm, here goes.

<<
-to cancel a number, just call. I heard that and I thought, uh-oh, I can see how quickly that will help, wading through 16 customer service menus and untrained CSRs. But happily, there is a number I did get permission to publicize that rings directly into the department I reached, staffed by people who all know their stuff: 877-742-7822 , 4am-11pm pacific time. They can not only handle your questions about these payments, but can cancel any OR ALL of your single use numbers whenever you like.

- Now, for the deals. Discover gives 7% off anything at bn.com and 15% off anything at cdnow.com simply by going through their site, along with many other deals. That's pretty good in itself, but it's especially nice for many magazine orders at bn.com. The reason is that they have cheap prices, but they automatically want to renew you next year at the "then prevailing rates," charging the same CC as an (ahem) "convenience." No thanks! This way, you get a great buy, 7% back, and then in 3 months or whatever, just change your single-use number and you're free and clear.

right the above info is for Discover, forgot to state that... the CSRs are usually moronic judging by their lack of knowlege such a service even existed. As for MBNA, they have a program you can use either transparently on the web (works through your web browser), or a downloadable Flash based program which starts with your computer every time you reboot.

(I prefer web version)

(Even Discover has some sort of forced download)

ok i'm an idiot.
discover has no convenience fee.

english is so totally a second language for me (just re-read the quote I inserted)

I've been using this for a couple monthes, you don't have to worry about a server getting hacked and stealing your CC number. They do reserve the right to adjust your "amount" for fees etc., so if a place adds on small extra fees they will most likely authorize it. Other than that it works fine.
