DeStefano says the 26th amendment, which states that U.S. citizens have the right to vote applies only to federal elections, not local.

"I think we also should remember that the same document, for a long period of time, precluded women, and African Americans from voting," DeStefano said. "And Americans had a more expansive view of what it meant to belong to a community. So for those that cite it, that applies to federal elections, and federal government is fine to make its own decisions. I'm just talking about our corner of the world. There are people who belong, in large numbers, to this community, who are members of the community, and I don't see an issue, as other communities around the United States have done, giving them a say about what happens in the place in which they live and pay their taxes, and have been good neighbors."

DeStefano plans to propose this to the state legislature in their next legislative session.

Governor Malloy said Wednesday that he's not comfortable with the idea and that voting is a privilege that comes with citizenship.

Going to side with the Governor here. Voting is a privilege for citizens and those who worked to become citizens. I'm pretty sure I can't visit Germany or France for a few months for work and vote in their local elections.

Don't think the mayor is going to have a job next election cycle either.

Yea, this is stupid. There's no good reason for giving illegals the right to vote. The laws should be focused on making them legal or pushing them out. Making them some sort of psuedo-legal class by giving them the right to vote makes no sense.
 
The point of view isn't that suprising, i'm sure a few people would agree. It is surprising to me that someone in that position holds that point of view.
 
He is a Democrat;
First get them in the country;
Then get them to vote where they will have the most influence
 
Yet we're recalling Scott Walker for balancing the budget, saving the jobs of teachers, cops, and firefighters, and giving Wisconsinites the right to defend themselves against criminals. Makes sense to me!
 
His basic premise, that the US Constitution doesn't apply to state or other local municipalities, is absurd. Everything he says bayond that is based on an obviously flawed premise and not worth addressing.

Let them all prove they paid their taxes first. In Pulaski county, MO, If you could not prove you did not owe taxes, then you could not get a driver's license. People with no citizenship or legal status are only guests.

I have a stellar idea. We let illegals vote for him and wherever the majority are from we deport the mayor to whatever dump that is and he can serve them there.

It seems that his motivation is based on the reality that many of these illegal immigrants are more integrated/assimilated into American society than many citizens with generations of roots here.
