I have to ask... why is the status of someone's citizenship so important? Blah blah I know this is normally a secret service requirement... but how often does the secret service check the backgrounds on people who shake the presidents hand?

What would happen if the secret service discovered an illegal alien? What if there is someone whose parents were born in Pakistan? Would the secret service use profiling to keep an eye on that student?

We need to investigate to make sure there is no profiling going on.

Everything can be important, the secret service is trying to get as much information as possible so they can do the best job possible protecting the POTUS. What figures into their threat assessment matrix is none of your (or mine) business. Let them do their job.

Rudder, just out of curiosity, why are you reading mlive? Being from Michigan, I read it, but I didn't think it had any national appeal.

As for the story, I don't think there's much of a story there, unless you're claiming hypocrisy between Obama condemning the AZ laws and this event.

So we should let just anyone close to the President?

While we are at it why not have him ride around in a convertible with the top down...no problems with protection there.......oh wait.....

So we should just let anyone in this country? Without knowing who they are or their criminal background?

Does Obama feel he's better than the rest of us, so he needs to check the "papers" of students, but its racism if the police check the papers of people they pull over?

....oh....wait....hypocrisy found. Whats good for the goose is good for the gander, wouldnt you agree Wheezer?

I ask my pooch the same question every morning. "Where are your papers?" And why did you miss them...again! Since my pooch has no tags, i can also say bad illegal. Bad.
Which reminds me... if my pooch needs tags and papers, why not humans?
Illegals should not only need papers, but kept on a leash too?

I don't think anyone would disagree that, whenever possible, we should make sure that everyone that is going to shake the President's hand at an event that's been scheduled for 2+ months has a clean background.

Whether or not that means Obama is a hypocrite for calling the AZ laws "misguided" is another story. An illegal alien isn't going to have a background available for a background check, right? Obviously they wouldn't want to gamble with that.

I think that anyone that shakes my hand or your hand should have a clean background. That shouldnt be a rule just for politicians.

I agree but this this whole shitty mess with immigration is not now nor has it ever been uner the control of a single person.

It requires not only the President, but also the spineless wonders in congress and in the states.

Regardless of your position on immigration, not just anyone should be able to walk up to the president.....should they?...if so, then why even have the Secret Service?....eliminate them completely from everyone in D.C. and put all that money from their wages and benefits back into the budget.

and no what's good for

it's funny that the kid is 'blaming' the president for something he didn't do. the kid is probably coached to ask that question.

I just think the whole comparison between this and the AZ laws are extremely weak. In my opinion, anyone trying to make it anything more than what it really is needs to pick his/her battles more carefully.

The beauty of the internet.

You are correct, I am posted this because I am curious about all the negative attitudes of people in regards to the "new" law (well enforcement enabler) in Arizona. Do not the citizens of the state of Arizona have a right to protection? That is one of the main tasks of the Federal government. I am not dissing the secret service for protecting the POTUS... just the obama administrations attitude to the law.

Interesting article:

They SS are asking for citizenship status. Does this imply that non-citizens are more of a threat to the POTUS? Do legal non-citizens get access at this event? I don't know.

And I agree with what the SS is doing and has always done. Whether you like obama or not... having him assasinated is not a good thing for this country.

The people of Arizona are not the POTUS. However, the citizens feel the need to express thier rights of freedom from economic and criminal elements of the illegal immigrants entering the state from Mexico. If Arizona bordered Iceland and Icelanders were coming across and illegally working at 1/4th the going wage for legal labor, I would applaud this law just as loudly.

They do have a right to protection, but I don't see how requiring every single student at Kalamazoo Central to "show papers" is any form of discrimination since every one of them has to do it, whereas the AZ laws have the potential for it.

I agree with the AZ laws, but I also understand the point of view of the people that are opposed to it. I don't really think there is a credible "other" point of view for requiring the students to "show papers" before shaking Obama's hand.

No, they should not. Nor should just anyone be able to walk up to ordinary citizens and people legally here

Again, whats good for the goose is good for the gander.

False outrage, especially following eight years where President Bush frequently required audience members to sign GOP loyalty oaths and he rarely, if ever, did a "public" appearance before anything but a carefully selected, friendly audience.

I'd be interested in the OP, rudder, who is from Tennessee, regularly reads Michigan papers and dug up this nugget on his/her own, or instead got it from some blog as the outrage of the day.
