Well, lately I've bought IBM and had no problems. But I need another hdd and I was wondering which one is the hdd of choice these days. Things change so quickly. Back in the day westerndigital used to be the best. But, ibm has looked pretty good. Only problem I have buying ibm is that I dont think anyone else has ata133 drives other than maxtor currently. Maybe I'm wrong i know this was the situation for a period of time. Anyway.. yeah.. so what's best?

WD has the fastest HD awith the 8MB cache series. Segate has some very quiet drives, and maxtor is in between the two.

You can go wrong with Western Digital or Maxtor, the WD JB series with 8MB of cache are great (I have a 1200JB) and the Maxtor D740X drive have the fastest access time of any IDE drive.

the WD JB's (8mb) are a great Bang for your buck... I cannot even here mine (but I have 9 fans running) just don't buy IBM unless it is SCSI😛 heck you can get an 80 gig JB now too if you don't need a monster drive Like the 100gig or 120gigger.

Last time I checked, Maxtor didn't make the 'cudas.
Seagate, perhaps? 😀

IBM drives are cheap and fast, only second to WD SEs. There were alot of problems with the 75gxp series, but that has been resolved with the 120gxps. If you would happen to have a problem, IBM is very good with RMAs.

Returned a WD1000bb just last week to Compusa. Thing crapped out on me in less than a week.
I would recommend Maxtor OR Seagate.

8mb of cache can do wonders!! Maybe not on every read/write you do, but it definitely gives immediate performance than say, an ata/133 drive or a raid 0 setup.

i've been kind of partial to maxtor with maxtor being the last 4 drives that i have bought but with the new WD 8mb cache drives i think i might switch over as soon as the price goes down a bit more.

Yep, they quickly sent you one of their refurb drives that is probably DOA or will fail just like the one you sent in within a year.
Deathstars are only cool in starwars.

Just last week I got a maxtor 60 gig D740x - I think that's the model #. I have had no problems with my ~2 yr old 20 gig maxtor. Those WD special editions do look sweet.
