Cripes, the vl40 comes in as fast or faster than the 75gxp that they reviewed. I would say that makes this a monstrous deal.

I'll also add a big positive for newegg. Great prices, great communication the whole way through. No problems whatsoever. I'll be ordering the kk266 and this drive from them next week. Thanks for the deal!!!

7200 RPM is good for 2 things:
1) Rotational delay is lower (== how long you wait for each uncached read request, until the head is over the data area you asked for).
This cannot be helped by areal density.
2) How quickly bits can be read from the platter.
This is helped by areal density.

Bottom line: Effective seek time on a 7200 would be better. Data transfer rate would depend on density and rotational speed.

Unfortunately you have to pay tax if you are in CA. But you do save about $5 and gas money/driving time from going to Frys. Good find!

So no matter what, no matter if it's a "fast" 5400 Maxtor, it's still not good enough for DV editing as 7200?

I bought this a few days ago, tried it out today. Newegg didn't pack it very well, thank god it isn't broken. It's OEM, 40 GB, 5400, don't know too much about it, but it was cheap.

Not to poop on this thread, but the Quantum Fireball Plus AS 40GB can be had for $160 - $35 rebate = $125. True, you do have to deal with a MIR, but you get a 7200rpm drive in return, and, if PC World is your HD review source, the link I included shows that they like it. For $10 more, I'd go for the Quantum.

For the record, I have the Fireball Plus LM 30GB, and I received my $30 rebate on that drive promptly. Some say they've had trouble with Quantum rebates, but I have to say my experience with them was exemplary: I got a confirmation that they received my MIR request, and I received the rebate within the stated time frame. The reason I went for Quantum was price/perf.--Quantums are much cheaper than comparable IBMs/WDs/Maxtors. I can't recommend the LM to anyone--performance is fine, it's just too damn loud. The AS takes care of the noise issue, so there's really nothing stopping you from getting it.

Checked out both the quantum & maxtor sites
average seek time for the quantum fireball plus AS is 8.5 ms
average seek time for the maxtor diamondmax 40 is < 9.0 ms

So i don't see this as being a big issue.

Also the PCWorld article says the quantum was slightly slower than the Maxtor Diamondmax Plus (do not confuse with the Diamondmax mentionned here). However, the Diamondmax isn't that much slower than the Plus...

As far as i'm concerned, it all boils down to whether you want to wait 6-8 weeks for a MIR.

BTW i think MIRs suck 😉

Actually, there have been some posts in this forum which have indicated that Quantum is taking substantially longer than 6-8 weeks to repay their rebates.

Think of it this way. A MIR is never a sure thing. So you have a 50/50 chance that the final price is $125 at outpost, that is, if quantum's rebate company is even 50/50. You don't want to pay $160 do you?

Sure:

Quantum Fireball Plus AS 40GB @ Outpost

Yeah, I've heard others that have had to wait longer than usual for the rebate, so, as always, YMMV. But my experience was good. I actually have to buy a HD for my cousin, and I'd definitely order the Quantum, except for the snowstorm headed into NYC 🙂. As it's time-sensitive, I'm going to try to get a Maxtor 40GB 7200rpm retail drive from a local Staples for $155 total (if they accept a $30 coupon--8xxxx codes are good for retail stores, right?).

As for 7200 vs 5400: I think you will definitely notice a difference if you're comparing drives of the same size. Especially on loading Windows, games, or when you have a bunch of things open at once. The difference won't be mind-blowing, but I just compared the Maxtor in question to the Quantum I linked, and the Quantum performs 10-15% better on most tests, in keeping with its rpm advantage. The faster the drive rotates, the less time you wait for the data you need to pass under the head.

Still, if you don't need storage now, waiting will always pay off, as HDs always offer more GB/$ every month or two. Heck, CompUSA was offering a 40GB HD + ATA-100 card for $100 a few weeks ago. And good find, Chaotix--didn't mean to steal your thunder or anything.

$180 - 30 + tax = $165, actually. My bad. I could get the Quantum for that price (and I wouldn't have to leave my house or take the subway 😉), plus have $40 coming back to me in a few weeks, but I can't take a chance on the drive being defective, as I have no time to deal with shipping replacements. If they don't honor the coupon, though, I'm going with the Q, as I won't be able to test the drive 'till Thurs, anyway.

Outpost.com may have the HD for a low price, minus the rebate, BUT as you will note in this thread that this person's having trouble with receiving their rebate because they ordered from a company not on Quantum's Retail and Online Resellers list. Outpost.com isn't one of the listed retailers. 😛 Sounds kind of like false advertising on Outpost.com's part if the rebate doesn't come through for you, which I hope it does. At any rate, there you have it. Just me trying to be perceptive. 🙂

This would be a good deal, except i picked up the maxtor 40 gig 7200 rpm (which when i opened was upgraded to the 45gig ata100 version) from staples for 90$ back in november 🙂

Otherwise, good find 🙂

I agree, I don't think you could have got a MAXTOR 40GB, 7,200 rpm drive for $90 last November. I would be surprised if Staples was selling them for much less than $150. Maybe you used one of the coupons for $40 off $150. I don't think Maxtor had any rebates going right then. It just doesn't add up.

They've taken the drive off of their specials page. It is still listed here at the same price but it says they're out of stock.

Newegg.com is a good place, bought my cpu 1.1 ghz t-bird and my geforce2 64mb from there and the free shipping is GREAT!😀

I got my Maxtor 40gig 7200 (which really was a 45gig ata100 version) back in November the following way:

1. Office depot had drive for like 120$ or something like that
2. Went to staples (B&M), price matched down to $120
3. Used 30$ off 100$ coupon
4. Final price: $90

I have the receipt around here somewhere if you guys don?t believe me 🙂
