Quantum Fireball Plus AS 40GB @ Outpost
Yeah, I've heard others that have had to wait longer than usual for the rebate, so, as always, YMMV. But my experience was good. I actually have to buy a HD for my cousin, and I'd definitely order the Quantum, except for the snowstorm headed into NYC
🙂. As it's time-sensitive, I'm going to try to get a Maxtor 40GB 7200rpm retail drive from a local Staples for $155 total (if they accept a $30 coupon--8xxxx codes are good for retail stores, right?).
As for 7200 vs 5400: I think you will definitely notice a difference if you're comparing drives of the same size. Especially on loading Windows, games, or when you have a bunch of things open at once. The difference won't be mind-blowing, but I just compared the Maxtor in question to the Quantum I linked, and the Quantum performs 10-15% better on most tests, in keeping with its rpm advantage. The faster the drive rotates, the less time you wait for the data you need to pass under the head.
Still, if you don't need storage now, waiting will always pay off, as HDs always offer more GB/$ every month or two. Heck, CompUSA was offering a 40GB HD + ATA-100 card for $100 a few weeks ago. And good find,
Chaotix--didn't mean to steal your thunder or anything.
