That's not maturity... and I did mention age. 17 year olds today are far more mature than they were decades ago, most (attractive ones) already having multiple partners, but still a year too young, which I also mentioned.
This is the law, so he should be prosecuted. Funny how people here can't read an entire post and instead can only process one part of it taken out of context.

I was a 17 year old decades ago.
I have kids who receive letters from colleges and I deal with kids of all ages between being part of the community and volunteering and all that other shit.
They are not more mature. They are just as they were years ago.

I read the documents in question. Assuming they are authentic, it doesn't read like a blackmail scheme. They are saying that in exchange for a "$25 million loan" to facilitate the rescue of Levinson, who they purportedly believe is alive, they will tell President Biden that Gaetz deserves credit for the rescue and recommend that Biden pardon Gaetz.
These people are in the private sector, had nothing to do with the investigation of Gaetz, and have no actual power to make it go away. This is not unlike a situation where someone is going to be sentenced for a crime, and another person asks that they do a community service, saying that if they do, they will speak to the judge on their behalf and tell them what a fine upstanding person he is and that the sentence should therefore be light.
In any event, this is not "extortion." Extortion involves physical threats. It is closer to the federal definition of backmail, but that involves the threat to turn someone in for crimes if they do not pay something of value, or not turn them in if they do. That is not happening here as these people are not claiming to be witnesses against Gaetz and are not threatening him in any way.
Also, as your earlier post suggests, it does absolutely nothing to indicate that Gaetz is not guilty of the things he is being investigated for, which sound like there may be a lot more to it than one 17 year old sex partner.

Lol exactly...not sure where he was going with the "mature" comment...I'm assuming he meant mentally. The majority of 17 yr olds these days are not as mature as 38 yr olds or even 28 yr olds. Heck they might actually be LESS mature than 30 or 40 yrs ago.

I'm aware of age of consent laws. Let's just say there is a spectrum of immoral behavior from fire and brimstone transgressions to things which we might call "sleazy." Being a 38 year old Congressman who selects high school seniors as sex partners is probably more on the sleazy side of things.
That being said, Gaetz is using this rather bizarre situation involving his father and some men who claim to want to rescue an American hostage in Iran as a distraction from whatever he is under investigation for when he knows damn well that it's irrelevant. So there's also that.

If I had meant that, I would have written that. Funny how people try to inject things not stated, in order to try to argue or cause drama.
The context was a 17 year old. I was sexually active by 17, fully capable of deciding whether or not to sleep with someone. That does not make it acceptable for a legal adult to sleep with a minor, but it's quite a bit different than "banging 12 year olds".

The same could be said about 18 y/o vs 20 y/o, or 30 y/o vs 40 y/o. The laws are what they are since a line had to be drawn somewhere, and should be enforced.

Yes it does. But that isn't all. The documents that Gaetz himself supplied to the Washington Examiner to prove this so-called "extortion scheme" state that Gaetz is also under investigation for "public corruption." Whatever that means, we do not know yet.
I strongly suspect that the 17 year old is just one piece of leaked information about a much broader investigation into Gaetz. With only some of it related to sexual misconduct.
