While Gaetz's defense seems questionable given the outing of this investigation and his argument is stupid, those laws suck and are basically part of the Satanic Panic Part 2 pack of bullshit child sex trafficking garbage that various groups (many of them right wing and religious) are using to force their beliefs onto others (ironically while they've been forcing themselves on women and children). Just watch, its going to become a big issue as that's going to be how they're gonna try to force porn filters and other Moral Majority bullshit just like they tried in the 80s. To be fair, its not just Republicans doing it (there was a bunch of fucked up stuff done under Obama, wherein I think the DoJ put pressure on banks to blacklist sex workers like pornstars from being able to use financial services - its somewhat ironic that Turmp was trying to enshrine and hide his payoff of a pornstar via legal documents), but just like how the Satanic Panic shit wasn't just Republicans, the general religious "think of the children" claims fed by insane lies (that they essentially perpetrated - i.e. religious people spread this hilariously ridiculous cartoonish version of Satan, which fuels normal idiots into craziness, which then goes back up the ladder where the leaders that made up the cartoony shit then claim that as real evidence to support it, and then they leverage their Mass of Morons to try and force whatever other fucked up shit they've been wanting while using those insane claims to say how it proves its needed because people didn't want that shit before) is the source of it.
People need to pay attention as this is how they're splintering voter groups like blacks and latinx. Just look at the Little Nas-X or whatever fervor about Satanism that's cropping up. And then there was the...I forget what it was even called that Netflix movie where right wingers claimed it was child porn. There were a lot of black people joining that and much of it was because the pull of religion is stronger than that of normal politics. And right wingers have known that for some time (they knew that back then which is why they worked to pivot from the blatant racist policies to made up crazy shit to sell to religious people).
