What does leaving $7 on a table have to do with dividing $27.63 by 4?

who doesn't round at a restaurant?

It doesn't seem like it was a place you would tip at.

But if we want nice even numbers:

Divide $273,770 by 4.

I can tell you it will end with a .5(not an integer) because the last 2 digits are not a multiple of 20 just by looking at it. Definitely doesn't make nice even numbers.

The point is that the math can be done in your head. Most bills from eating out range from 5 to 100 bucks (depending on who you're with, anyways). So doing division at that range is elementary for most people on this board. Telling us to divide larger and larger numbers in our heads doesn't do anything for the validity of your argument.

Also, the number I calculated in my head is:

68442.5

HA. Lies.

Was at Pizza Hut one day. Had a bill that was like 27 or so, and we wanted to have it split 4 ways, because none of us had the cash on us to cover it total, unless one wanted to use a credit card. The girl was like "I don't know how to do that... can you? I'm not so good at math". When we walked out we busted up laughing.

Could you honestly divide something like $27.63 by 4 in your head on the fly?

Of course, she should have had a calculator available.

Round to nearest whole number (28), divide (7), then deduct difference in change (37), divide by 4 (6.9). You end up with $27.6, a bit off, but it works;). Ok, I checked with a calculator...

How about round up to 28, divide by 4(you have 4 people) then subtract (.37 divided by 4). Fairly easy numbers to use and someone leaves an extra copper.

273770 is an even number, last I checked.

uh..yes. I just calculated it to be 6 + 0.75 + 0.15 and 3 cents left over. So everyone pays 6.80 + 1 cent except for 1 person...

The exact way I did it. It's really not that difficult? I guess some people calculate things in a different manner. You take $28/4 ($7), the remaining $.37/4 (three nines and a ten) and subtract the latter from the former. You come up with a $6.90 for one person and $6.91 for three. Meh.

The point is that whenever you need to do something like dividing $27.63 by 4 in your head on the fly, a large degree of precision is typically not needed.

And you'd be wrong.

(6.8*3) + 6.81 = $27.21

I agree, but if someone was asked to do that exactly, in their head, it's understandable that it would take some time.

I have always had problems doing math in my head when it is more than simple stuff - I would have to write it out and divide it by hand. Just annoying and waste of time so I'd use a calculator.

It's extra that you didn't need to pay.

i bill at a high enough rate that the 5 minutes it'd take her to come to the table, get the money, go to the register, and come back, are worth more than $0.37.

I wouldn't disagree with that.

My point is that the guy I responded to was making fun of this person for not being able to divide an amount like that in her head, seemingly easily.

You can't just rattle off the answer unless you are very good at math and the average person wouldn't be able to do it. That doesn't make them stupid.

OdiN can't do math either. 6.75 + 15 = 6.90 not 6.80

$6.9075, and i did that mentally even though i can't prove it.

28/4 - .37/4
$7 - .0925
